I'm a worrier so I don't let them run with sharp stuff or toothbrushes (I've read a lot of sick stories) but I don't think I would have worried about a small stick. A kid at the playground today found a long branch and was hitting other kids with it - I said something to him and his mom gave me a bad look. :bummed:

Running around outside with sticks is just part of a kid being a kid to me. I wouldn't have been worried.

Running around outside with sticks is a normal kid thing to me. I mean he might get hurt but most likely not. He could get hurt by just running too. I think we just have to let kids be kids.

@travellingbee: it went through white part so it was okay in the end but fairly traumatic. It was lodged in there. Yes he was just running and fell on it. I think he was about 2 or 3.

DH had a friend who got a toothbrush impaled through the roof of his mouth when he was running around and jumping with it. So, no running with things in your mouth seems like a good place for me to draw the line.

I usually make my lo put down sticks. She usually picks up pretty big ones and she's prone to getting hurt and I'm always afraid she will hurt someone else as well.

I'm pretty lax about this too. I'm sure there are a bunch of ways it could hurt him, but I try not to helicopter. I might remind him to slow down and tell him that he may get hurt, but I wouldn't freak out or grab it away. Usually, he just wants to run with it for a minute or two and then he drops it on his own and moves on to the next thing.

@T.H.O.U.: he's extremely athletic and it was a little stick that at worst would scratch him.

I can't imagine the scenario that would result in a serious injury from this, and I'm not at all afraid of little injuries. I want him to be confident in his abilities so I try not to helicopter him. But maybe I just haven't heard enough stories of serious stick injuries to know how great the risk is.

We let our kids do a lot more things that my mom doesn't like.

So my LO is two and basically doesn't know how to just walk. He runs everywhere. Today he was running outside on the grass with a small stick in his hand and my MIL freaked out and couldn't believe that we were letting him run with a "sharp" object. She then informed me that it would be much safer to give him large chucks of hotdog than to let him run around the yard with this stick. I'm sorry but, seriously, what are the odds that if he fell, his stick would happen to fly up into his eye and impale him? Surely not high. Surely he'd have more of a chance of choking. Am I crazy? I can't find any statistics online for stick injuries... I just don't think its a huge deal but maybe I'm too lax??
