Everyone - thanks for the replies. I figured that most daycares allowed kids to come if they have colds, but not fevers. I don't want to look for another daycare, it was stressful enough the first time!

@mamacate: Provider is licensed and the state's policy is colds are okay, fevers aren't. However I just looked at our contract and provider wrote that kids need to stay home with colds. I didn't get a note from ped today, but I'll tell her that DS has ped's clearance.

@lazylightning: I like your idea!

@sunny: I just checked the contract and it says that kids need to stay home if they have "colds or illness". Pretty vague and strict!

@amelieisme: I agree that the policy is too strict. We pay whether he attends or not, I guess that's how she stays in business!

There should be some written policy as to what is not ok (eg fever, yellow mucous, diarrhea). I'd ask your provider about that!

My LO pretty much had a cough/congestion/runny nose all last winter...as did all the other kiddos. Most daycares don't send home for that, only if they are running a fever. Don't see how you could run a daycare in the winter with such a strict policy!

@Katrocap: yikes! That sounds a little over-reactive! Our daycare is a center and has a policy like T.H.O.U. Said about no green or yellow discharge. We also got a sheet detailing the policy of when LO could come and when we had to keep her out. It was per the health dept. is she licensed? If she is, she likely has to abide by some similar standard.

For tomorrow I would bring your ped's clearance and then ask nicely for a written policy to make sure you are on the same page. Good luck!

Yup, our daycare allows LOs to attend if they have a cold but otherwise are not too out of sorts. LO would have stayed home for months on end if not! She was sniffly almost the entire first winter!

I think ours has a policy about it being yellow or green runny but not of its clear and certainly ok to go if he's been cleared by a doctor. My daughter had a clear runny nose for almost the first year of daycare.

My daycare, when DD was in daycare, would send her home if she had a fever. That was about it. I have a friend who's daycare wouldn't let her child attend if the baby had diarrhea. But I've never heard of not allowing a kid who had a cold! I'm a SAHM and my 18 month old still gets a cold once a month, at least. That seems really unreasonable.

wow, yes, normally daycares allow kids with sniffy noses to come, or else you might as well quit your job. Can you talk to her, or find another daycare?

I went to drop DS (8 months) off at daycare today ... his provider noticed he was congested and had a runny nose and said that she'd isn't supposed to let him attend if he has a cold. So I stayed home from work (which really stunk because I've only been back for 2.5 weeks) and took him to the ped. Doctor said he just has a normal cold. I asked if he was okay to go to daycare and doctor said yes, he doesn't have a fever and that if babies didn't go to daycare when they have colds/runny noses they'd never be there!

Not sure what DS's provider's reaction will be tomorrow. She's a family daycare with one other kid. Is this policy normal? The doctor said his cold could last 1-2 weeks. Obviously, I can't miss that much work!
