I found it really compelling, but I couldn't help but feel weirdly voyeuristic, I think because of some of the privacy issues raised in that Vox article. I didn't agree with all of the article, but it articulated why I felt vaguely squeamish as the focus shifted deeper and deeper into John B's private life post mortem. It's set in Alabama and centers around this guy who's feels he never really fit in to the culture he always lived in. That's probably as descriptive as I can be without giving away too much. I will say that being from a small southern town a lot of it feels<br /> so familiar... the politics, the gossip, the number of churches compared to the number of people living in poverty, the fact that people never leave, etc. My brother reminds me of John B quite a bit. It's from the This American Life and Serial people, and it starts with a guy writing into TAL to suggest that somebody come to his small town in Alabama to investigate a murder that he apparently heard somebody bragging about but that nobody was ever charged with.
