i agree with others that getting to 6 months with all the issues that came up is really great. i think you have figured things out a lot more than you realize--"figuring out" just takes on a different meaning depending on the situation, and you've had a lot of curveballs.

my pediatrician told us to start purees before 6 months. honestly, i'm not sure i'm up to it.

I feel you! I haven't had the trials you have but feel like we're finally in a groove and I'm scared of the transition! It's all a part of them growing up, which I want her to do and don't at the same time! Good luck! I definitely plan on taking it slow and like PPs mentioned, he might not even want a ton to start or he will love to nurse still!

@jedeve: Dont feel sad, you should feel very good about perservering despite all the odds and now that your LO is starting solids you can relax a bit and not have to worry about every meal.

If your lo is gaining well on bfing then there really isn't any necessary rush to start solids, especially since you two are still trying to get nursing down. Most babies are ready (showing all signs of readiness) between 6-8 months & just bc your lo is showing all signs still doesn't mean you *have* to start solids. I can totally understand your apprehension & with as much as we went through bfing we pushed solids back until I felt confident they wouldn't interfere with bfing through the first year since mostly bf/ff is still necessary through then.

You've done a great job! My LO is 8 months and I'm freaked out solids too. I'm still flirting with BLW. It's okay to not be ready yet.

I agree with the others! It sounds to me as if you've been working really hard and should feel accomplished that you made it to 6 months despite all of the issues!

If it helps you, I never figured out breastfeeding. After 3 weeks, I exclusively pumped. And then once I went back to work, I stopped pumping. He had breast milk until he was 3.5 months old...so you've made it much farther than me!

Don't beat yourself up...you're trying to do what's best for your baby, and it's ok that you're still trying to figure it out! As soon as you get used to something, there will be something else that changes and you'll be at square one again. Babies are ever changing and it's hard to finally get used to a routine when it changes so often!

Wow, sound to me like you should be incredibly proud of all that you have gone through!

PS My 8 month old is still practically EBF... don't count on your kid liking solids, at least not right away! You may still have some time to play with :D

LO is nearing six months, and I'm kinda sad about starting solids. He is EBF, but we've had almost every problem in the book. Trouble latching, quick weight loss, inverted nipples, using a nipple shield, thrush, oversupply, strong letdown, extremely sore nipples, cracked nipples, plugged ducts, under supply when pumping....everything but mastitis.

I'm not a martyr., I BF because its good for his health, costs less, is convenient, empowering. Also though because I have a rare bladder disorder and the hormones from bf-ing keep me in remission.

But we just weaned from the nipple shield last week. I still have sore nipples. The LC says his latch is fine, my nipples just might be tethered. It might be the thrush, but I've been taking probiotics regularly.

I'm just sad and feel pretty stupid not to have figured out breastfeeding before we start solids. It seems everyone else figured it out months ago!
