Well if things are still looking good, can you get the induction postponed a week, maybe two? I was induced at 42 weeks and it was sooo rough to wait out that last little bit, but I was very happy to avoid the cervadil. I think there are more risks associated with cervadil than the pitocin.
Some doctors don't really "get" that some women really want to AVOID inductions rather than pushing to have them at 40, 39, or earlier. As long as your doc says nothing's wrong, I don't see why you couldn't ask him to reschedule the induction. Nothing is written in stone!

@bykes187 - I am 40w6d. My Cervix is now about a 2cm and roughly 70% effaced, The Dr. Said that there isn't much risk going from 40-41 weeks as the baby is still fine but the risk going from 41-42 weeks for still birth is a little higher so he needed to check my placenta and the amniotic fluid. Both look great so he has it planned to start the induction at 7:30pm on Thursday.

I was just hoping that I could get something going on my own. I would rather not have to use the cervadil/cytotec or even the pitocin if I didn't have to.

How many weeks are you? I really kind of hate to bring it up, but one of the cohoshes (either black or blue) I have heard THIRD HAND is supposed to be useful for "natural" induction but I seriously DO NOT KNOW what I'm talking about so please please research carefully before you try that. Other ideas have already been mentioned, but really, I think most of it is old wives' tales. Maybe the castor oil.
And if your cervix isn't ready... is there any reason to be induced yet? I had one with just Pitocin because I was already at 3 cm, and they just turned it on to maybe a couple notches above minimum and left it there the whole time. I'm just wondering if you have history or any markers right now that are indicating risk in going... however long is it that you're going. Some doctors prefer 40, or 41, but my doctor, who was an EXCELLENT maternal-fetal specialist (so used to high riskers, which I was not), told me I was fine until 42.

@geekinheels We live about 2 miles from Scalini's and I am definitely planning on going there for some eggplant parm when it's time for us to deliver.

I had an acupuncture "induction" and my son was born less than 12 hours later after only 5 hours of unmedicated labor! I'll definitely be trying that again if I go over in any future pregnancies.

I thought of the castor oil but as of last week, my cervix wasn't ripe enough so I'm not sure it would work.

That recipe looks tasty though and at the very least I could have a good dinner. I had read that aside from the eggplant itself, the oregano and basil seem to have chemicals that can help with contractions and labor. Of course, this is only once labor is close or established.

I had hoped to have another exam yesterday at my appointment but the Dr. had an emergency C-Section with another patient so I just got a NST and a quick ultrasound to check the placenta. It sucks not knowing if I've made any progress or not and we won't be seeing him again until we are induced next Thursday.

Castor oil worked for me the first time around, and I plan on doing the same if I start to get REALLY uncomfortable around my due date.

That being said, like others have said before, no non-medical method will work unless the baby is ready to come out. :-(

Perhaps you can try the famous Scalini's Eggplant Parm? :-P http://www.scalinis.com/Bambino.htm

Yeah, I read all that too. We were joking about trying historical methods like tying me to a pole and banging it up and down like the pilgrims or planning to "fake" attack me to scare the baby out like the Native Americans.

It's funny that even walking supposedly doesn't help. It's all in Bug's hands.

I was totally going crazy by 38 weeks to get my body moving into labor. After doing a lot of research, it debunked pretty much every wives' tale. For the pineapple, it's basically a laxative and you'd have to eat pounds of it to get that effect (same for spicy food). Castor oil just messes up your stomach and causes intestinal contractions, which some say stimulate uterine ones (may or may not). But it's pretty dangerous with the dehydration risk. Pressure points aren't reliable, sex isn't a guarantee either. What I read was your baby may actually secrete hormones that trigger labor when the baby is ready to come. Nothing you can do will help that process unless the kiddo is ready (outside of medical intervention).

Sorry to be a debbie downer, but I know how disappointed I got every time a method didn't work :(

Thanks. I know neither method actually will start labor unless you are ready or already in the midst of labor. At this point, I just need to get my cervix to be a little more favorable for the induction or hopefully start labor on my own. I'm kind of grasping at straws since I don't really want to have to do the cervadil/cytotec/whatever it is thing.

both the evening primrose and red raspberry leaf aren't believed to induce labor. Evening primrose is supposed to ready your cervix and red raspberry leaf is supposed to tone your uterus so your contractions are more efficient when you do go into labor.

While some moms start these earlier than where you are now, I don't think it's too late... You can still try them if you think you might benefit from them.

I was also trying to induce naturally and started the evening primrose at 39 weeks. I went into labor a few hours after my first dose, but my doula and OB both said it was probably just a coincidence. the red raspbery leaf I started at 34 weeks, and I do have to say, my contractions were very strong and intense... I had a 6 hr, natural labor. That's possibly due to the fact that this was #2 though. They say red rasp leaf is good post-partum too. Drink 3-4 cups a day.

I have a friend who has 4 kids... With 3 of them she walked all day (literally all day) to try and induce labor. That worked for her! My OB said these natural methods only worn though if your body is already ready anyway.... Good luck to u!!!

I think it's too late for the evening primrose oil and red raspberry leaf tea. You're supposed to start those around 36 weeks.

I had a good session of acupuncture, that got labor going, but I had also begun that two weeks prior to my due date (I went over by 6 days).

Does anyone have safe ideas or experience trying to start labor at home? The Dr has us scheduled for induction on 10/20 but I would like to see if I can get this Bug out without the interventions if possible. Since we had a perfect NST and the placenta still looks good the Dr. mentioned trying whatever I wanted at this point. I'm not down for the castor oil since it can cause the baby to go into distress but I'm thinking of Evening Primrose Oil and Red Raspberry Leaf Tea since I've already done the spicy food, sex and pineapple. It all sounds so ridiculous but hey, I'm always up for trying something new.

Any suggestions or help Bees?
