We reused the mattress we had for DD with DS. DD got it for 2 years, and he got it for another 2.

@Corduroy: At the risk of being a bit off-topic, there actually is some amazing new research on SIDS - we could potentially be so close to figuring it out! http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/health/one-seattle-childrens-doctor-thinks-he-close-to-stopping-sids/

I never even considered that I might need a new one... it's been in storage in my spare room for nearly a year and DD has been using it as a trampoline

We'll be reusing LO's mattress when #2 arrives. She's still sleeping in it now, so if I had any concerns, she wouldn't be on that one anyway. It's also been covered in a waterproof cover, but we've never even had an issue with leaking.

@78h2o: never! But we haven't potty trained, and she's always slept in a sleep sack (can't take her diaper off) and doesn't take liquids into the crib.

@Anagram: wow, no accidents?! Our crib matyress has seen some hard times! It is supposedly waterproof though and at least half the time we had a second cover on it.

My older LO will be moving into a full size bed, but we are getting a new mattress for our second. My bigger concern is that they lose firmness over time which increases the risk of SIDS.

I think I've read three 'new causes' or SIDs articles this week. It's scary and sad but they just don't know the cause. My LO2 will reuse LO1's mattress.

So when you google "SIDS and mattress toxins", several websites pop up that have impressive names like "The SIDS prevention organization", but then they actually just sell mattress covers that supposedly prevent this toxic gas, and therefore prevents SIDS.

When trying to find any credible sources, I found this: http://www.firstcandle.org/cms/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Toxic_Gas_Theory.pdf

We already know that the medical community doesn't totally know what causes SIDS, and the mattress theory doesn't explain why babies sleeping on couches or in rock-n-plays, etc would die from SIDS.

TL;DR: It's an unsubstantiated claim that mattress toxins cause SIDS.

It's really confusing because I've heard what you said, that reusing mattresses is a no-no. But I've also heard that new mattresses are questionable because they're off-gassing more than one that's been well aired out. I *think* I'd get the new mattress for the new LO, just so the toddler could have the consistency of keeping their mattress. Not that that answers the question really, but with so much conflicting information I wouldn't be able to decide any other way.

Hmm- I was planning to reuse the mattress for the next baby. I didn't really even consider not. It's still very firm, and has always been a covered with a waterproof mattress cover, so I don't see how it could be that dirty or fungus-y. Maybe I'm wrong though?

I'm wondering what would be a safer option for baby... reusing our Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer mattress (~$200 mattress - Phthalate Free, Latex Free, Lead Free, BPA Free, Vinal Free) or getting a new, less expensive (~$53) mattress - Saftey First Heavenly Dreams (Phthalate and Lead Free but not Vinal Free) mattress? (Buying a 2nd $200 mattress is not in the budget right now).

Our toddler would get one of the mattresses... either her old Moonlight Slumber mattress or the new Saftey First mattress.

I have heard it's best not to reuse a mattress for an infant because of the possibility that fungus in the mattress could cause SIDS??? So I guess I am wondering what is riskier... the possibility of fungus or a less natural/less chemical free mattress??
