I find comfort in the fact they prepare for it. But saddened that in today's world there is a need to do so.

I live in a small Military town, and Childcare is HARD to get. High demand, little spots available. My daughter uses the Government daycare center. Which is actually a VERY NICE facility. I LOVE IT! When the base threat level goes up here, that also increases security at her center, because its gov property. Weird when you roll up to your child daycare center and see Military police or an armed guard standing out. I try not to think about the possibility and WHY they have to do this.

The school I work in has drills. By state law, we need to do X number of fire drills, X number of lock downs, X number of lock outs, and X number of evacuation. I'm not sure how young they start in this district (I work in 3-5th grade). My son's preschool does fire drills only I believe.

@catomd00: my kids weren't phased by them at all - just me!

And we did not have any drills besides fire drills growing up - you must be much younger than me if you had lock downs!

I don't think it's any different or more scary than a fire drill that no one bats an eye at. It's not like they're calling them shooter drills. It could be anything. Also, growing up we definitely had lock down drills. I went to a small private school in a very safe, small town. So I just am kind of shocked when people feel they are a recent thing and that they didn't do them growing up.

We had an evacuation drill where students needed to walk off campus 10 minutes away. It brought up interesting conversations with my child to process it together. "Mommy, give me an example of when we would have to do this." I also like the practice to be prepared if the time will ever come. When the kindergarten teacher prepared the kids for the earthquake drill, she went under the desk, told them how the floor would feel etc so the kids could totally mentally prepare the day before.

The thing that scares me is the notes home saying there was a (real) stranger danger incident reported in the neighborhood.

My son already had one a few weeks ago. The school sent home a note to prepare parents in case children thought it was scary. I think they have 2 more thoughout the year. They did and intruder type drill and an evacuation drill.

To me, a Drill is practice...like a fire drill or a lockdown. I think it's important to practice, we do them at our office, so I think we need to normalize them for children.

The problem I have though, is that when it's a legitimate emergency, people don't know until it is too late, then they panic and don't actually follow the protocol. It's human nature, unfortunately. We had a fire on our floor once, we all freaked out. None of us thought to actually pull the fire alarm, even though we had been taught to do so. Seems so simple, but...so not what happened.

The daycare that the boys go to do have safety drills. The ones that scare the kids more are the fire drills rather than the safety "intruder" drills. They're more informational, and the kids like being helpful for those. The fire drills scare my LO b/c the alarm is so loud, and he freaks out at loud things like that.

I get teary eyed when I see these emails come thru - I think because they scare the crap out of me that they are even needed.

This was the 3rd drill this year - the 1st was for a person of interest on school grounds outside and the 2nd was for something that required they leave they building and they were all evacuated to a local church

The only drills we had growing up were fire drills!

Does your school have lots of safety drills?

---
Dear XXX Community,

I wanted to make you aware that we participated in a Lock Down drill this morning. For this particular drill, we simulated that there was a person of concern in the community (not on our campus or within our school). Teachers made sure all rooms were locked and secured. In the future, we will practice a drill that has an intruder inside our building.

We live in an ever changing society where safety needs to be stressed and practiced. I appreciate your support with my efforts in making the students at xxxx feel safe.
