Thanks ladies! I talked to my husband and he thinks he can put something together...maybe won't be as professional looking but hopefully less than an $80 child proofing gate! ;)

I would maybe check out hardware stores for small gates for decking and fencing. Things are usually less expensive if they aren't specifically marketed for children.

Our deck has an opening with a couple of stairs down to the lawn and I'm looking for a gate or something to keep the deck enclosed so I can have my kids play on the deck and be comfortable with them playing out there while I start dinner inside, etc. There are plenty of windows and a large deck door in the kitchen so I can easily keep an eye on them from the kitchen but would feel more comfortable knowing there isn't a way to get off the deck. I guess I'm looking for something like this http://www.amazon.com/Cardinal-Gates-Outdoor-Child-Safety/dp/B00CE8C7SO but preferably more affordable!

Any suggestions for other outdoor gates or something else I could try? TIA!
