I always feel sharper after a few hours of doing crossword puzzles. Definitely in the same boat, though!

I like to do creative things with my free time, I think it helps the brain. And play dates are always nice. Right now my LO is still pretty little so they're more for me getting mommy friend time then they are for her.

After I graduated I spent 9 months or so at home with no job. I spent time reading and writing and reading news online. I tried to learn Spanish too.

I'm not sure if this is true but I think physical labor helps the mind. I exercise and work in the yard a lot. And then for my mind I try to stay somewhat current in my field - I'll teach a class or tutor. I'm also trying to learn another language (I stink at it even though I hear my husband speak it everyday, I still try though), and I do try to stay up on the news for reading, though I haven't just read a novel in awhile.

I think reading is a huge part of staying sharp for anybody. Even people who work outside the home start to lose their sharpness because they get so used to doing the same thing every day. Helping kids with homework in the future will really help too because you'll start practicing all these skills you've lost over time. I also think getting out and interacting with people is a good way to stay sharp.

What about lots of reading? Goodreads.com is a really good outlet for online book discussion. Maybe you can make a calendar of books to read (or join a book club either online or in person), and then discuss them on Goodreads to practice reading retention and comprehension.

There's also probably a ton of online resources for practicing a variety of subjects. I might look up math problems to work on. And history topics to read and learn from.

What about some kind of challenging new art form? Learning to paint, sketch, knit, etc. And just keep trying new ones after you've mastered the previous ones.

Were there any subjects in school you really enjoyed? If you loved science, maybe you can subscribe to some scientific magazines to come to your mailbox.

BTW, just having the opportunity to continue to learn and grow is really special. Props to you for wanting to keep it in your life and stay sharp.

Well, right now I'm working on my Master's which helps a lot, I think. I get two days a week that are devoted to schoolwork instead of babies.

Also, we cancelled our cable. In the evenings, DH and I read in bed or talk (we still watch a couple shows online, but it's like 2 hours total a week). We've been reading the same books, lately, and discussing them, which is a really nice bonding activity.

I don't know where this belongs but...

If you stay at home, how do you keep your brain sharp? I have been a SAHM for a year now but for a year and a half before that, I was a SAHW. I wish I was joking when I say this, but I feel like I am losing some of my brain power. What activities can I do to keep my brain going? I want to retain some knowledge for when it is time to start helping my kiddos with their homework!
