We have the tv on all the time. I hate silence and like the background noise. We are far from anti screen time though.

I used to have it on all the time as background noise. After LO turned 1, I was more mindful of screen time and limit to certain times of the day.

Nope. It mostly has to do with the configuration of our house. We spend most of our time in the kitchen and the playroom (connected to each other thru a doorway) and you can't see the TV from the kitchen so I never have it on because I can't see it! And I don't want to turn it up loud to listen to it. We spend 90% of our mornings from breakfast to lunch out of the house anyways and then I get my fill during her nap time. But prior to LO if I was at home I would have it on all the time! I love TV! I do really miss the Today Show in the morning.

I SAH right now and I usually have netflix on my iPad playing in the background. I guess I figure if it's small, maybe DS won't notice as much? He doesn't really look at it often, but I'm sure it still kind of counts as screen time. :/ Our big TV is only on after he goes to bed, or on football sunday.

Until he was about 8 weeks I had it on constantly. I was soooo bored and I liked to have it on, especially during naps.
Now he's just shy of 6 months. I started noticing (I forget when) that if I had it on he zoned me and everything else out and watched so I stopped leaving it on constantly. I'm not Anti-screen time, but I figured that it's better for him to "talk" to me. Bette for me too.
I started noticing that he would be fussing for attention or boredom and I'd be zoned into something on TV instead of him. I'm not good at leaving it on for background noise, if it's on I'm watching. So I guess he gets it from me :-)

BUT, it is a godsend when I need to get something done, usually in 10-20 minute increments. This morning I put it on when I desperately needed the bathroom and he was screaming when I left the room. Bob the Builder went on and he was mesmerized. I also recently started to use it in the evening when he tends to be clingiest but I need both hands to get his bath and bedtime set up. Put him in his bouncer and put on Barney or Mickey and he's happy.

So, I don't leave it on all day, but I ain't afraid to use it if I need it!

It's usually not on during the day, but we do watch a show before bedtime and have snuggle/milk time.

This winter we really struggled and TV shows were much more frequent, but I'm a fan of doing what it takes to survive, and I know with Spring coming we will be outside playing more.

No, I'm really opposed to tv as background noise. We watch our allotted shows in the morning before breakfast, and then a little more at night, and that's it. I don't want my child to rely on it for entertainment. I need background noise, though, so we usually have music playing.

I'm home 4 days a week, when we first got home all I did.was have the tv on. Then I read an article that compared passive screen time to second hand smoke and I freaked out and stopped having it on. My anxiety got terrible and I was yelling at my DH because he would have the tv on while I wasn't home. I've started to rwlize how crazy that is, so now I let DH do whatever and I listen to audiobooks, podcasts, and NPR. Occasionally I'll watch youtube clips. But my mommy guilt is terrible I have a rough time with everything.

I SAH til my son was 6.5 months old and the TV was constantly on. From 6.5mo to 9mo we had a live in nanny and I was totally fine with her keeping the TV on too, though I don't think she actually did. With both of us, we were usually out and about most or all of the morning, and after PM nap my son just explored and played around the house (never been into long interactive play - after a few minutes of patty cake or songs he's like...can you leave me to get back to my business!?) but wasn't mobile enough to need constant supervision, so without the TV I would have gotten really bored...I love to read but with a split focus I couldn't even get into a magazine, so TV or net surfing it was!

I usually try not to have it on. I'm extremely influenced by 'expert ' opinions . So once I read that under two they shouldn't be watching I stopped watching with E around. After 6weeks though she would stop and stare when it was on , so if she'd ignored it I may not have worried.

Well, our TV in our living room is connected to a computer, so I sometimes use it to surf Facebook or do graphic design work. I rarely have it on with a TV show during the day.

In our new home there will be no TV on the main floor. (Only one in the basement and possibly our bedroom).

Yep. We're tv people so when we're home it's generally on. Otherwise I have spotify. We're out most of the day and we can't hear/see it in the dining room. LO watches maybe 2 shows of her own a day and we watch dvred kelly and michael together. LO's definitely not planted in front of it all day and she has actually learned a lot from the few shows she watches so it's not an issue for me.

I didn't sahm when my son was a baby but I had the TV on all the time during mat leave. I started staying at home when he was 14 months and I was in my first trimester with my daughter and we watched a lot of HGTV together. I feel like he didn't really start watching TV until about 18 months and then I started limiting it more. He's over 2 now and I have 2 LOs to care for now, so he gets to watch TV through out the day. Usually in the morning while I get us all ready to go out for an activity. And usually while I'm putting lil sis down for a nap or while she naps so I can get stuff done around the house.

@Ra: love you for keeping it real.

It was up until 11 ish months? She started really watching it and I like Disney cartoons so the temptation to let her watch too much was strong lol. I rarely watch my shows while she's awake because she is constantly talking to me/asking for a book and I miss everything. We watch about 1.5 hours in the am and then if DH isn't home yet she can watch cartoons around 4 but if he is home sports are usually on and she doesn't watch that much. It's on a lot compared to some families but I feel like we have a good balance. If I need background noise we listen to music

I'm home with LO about 3 days a week, and I'm guilty of leaving the tv on ALL DAY. I would go crazy if I didn't have something to glance at and entertain me periodically. But LO definitely looks at the tv and I see him straining his head to catch a glimpse, so I know that I need to start turning it off SOON. Argh.
