I should make some notes. My lady is not a nanny she is more of a daycare so everything is on her schedule. She picks him up but he is in the car a lot for her family things like dropping her kids off at sporting events. We didn't have any problems with her favoring her kid who was 4 years older. He is most definitely part of the family which I like. I also had an exit plan. He could start preschool at 18 months old if it didn't work out. But we love it. She feeds him our food and naps him on the best schedule for her and us.

One major benefit to us is her ability to watch him early or late. I teach evenings so sometimes he is there until 9:30 at night if my husband is on travel.

This is what one of my friends does for part-time childcare. I think it works out well for her, and the caregiver is her neighbor so it's super convenient!

@Bao - That's basically what I'm looking for! Either a SAHM who lives nearby and won't make drop off/pick up a total inconvenience or someone who's cool with coming to our place.

Today is our first day with this setup (a nanny is bringing her 4 month old to our house to watch my 5 month old)!

I am a SAHM and I watch our friends 15 month old, plus my cousins 7 week old, and my 4 month old. I only charge $25 a day per kid, so it's not a lot, but it's money I get for being able to raise my baby.

@MrsPen - Luckily (or unfortunately?) the friend is nearby but not super convenient. My husband would have to do all the drop off/pick up and it would add to his commute. If she came to us, it would be different. She's also TTC #2 and would be on a similar time line to us TTC #1 which makes it kinda not ideal either. I agree though, it's a slippery slope with a friend. But, finding someone independently seems really ideal! I think I'm going to look into it when the time comes.

@TheHistoryofUs - I think I'd look for someone to come to my house to avoid that and make things easier on us too. In my perfect world of course ;)

Growing up I went to one occasionally. My best friend was an only child and her mom watched other kids on the side. But there was a lot of kids.. usually 4-6 in the day and then 4 more after school. Not sure that is legal.. it might have been then though.
It worked well I thought, as she only had one of her own and she didn't get special attention, and all the kids played together.

I think that's the downside of a dayhome, as it's usually (not always) run by a mom who wants to be a SAHM but make money at the same time. Sometimes most of the attention is on her kids, but like @Mrs. Pen said, it could work if the mom is responsible/professional enough to know that this is a business arrangement.

this is what I did for awhile :) it's a nice arrangement if the mom is responsible enough to not put her child's needs first all. the. time. It's important to have someone who is fair and respectful of the fact they're getting paid to watch someone else's child in addition to caring for their own. It can be a slippery slope if it's a friend IMO... I wouldn't hire a friend to be my employee. too awkward and could end badly.

It can be a really great situation but I have a friend who didn't care for the arrangement and ended up pulling her son and putting him in a center.

She felt like her son wasn't getting enough attention. The lady would do chores rather than sit/play with the babies. Also, her son got dragged to some errands that interrupted his schedule that wasn't good either. There were issues with babyproofing the house (lady had an older child). Also an issue with cleaning/etc.

My SAHM friend watches my son. It's extra income for her and he has a lot of attention. I love it.

Has anyone found a SAHM that ended up being their nanny? Or, any SAHMs who also became a nanny as well?

We have a friend who would love to watch our (future) LO and it got me thinking... If you're home watching your kid anyways, why not make a couple bucks at the same time and watch someone else's LO?!

Does such a thing exist or am I dreaming?
