My son's preschool has "Mother's Days Out" programs for 18-24 months and 2 years old. I sent my oldest to preschool at 2.5 years b/c I needed some time in my third trimester to relax twice a day. It was nice. He loved it! Plus, I was getting heavier and less able to carry him so much. And I wanted him to have something for himself once his little brother came along. I think it helped a lot.

Yes! I want her to socialize with other kids. The earliest you can put a child in daycare is 1 yrs old here. I'll have to see if she's ready for it by then, if not, I'll definitely wait until she's a little older.

While she's in daycare, I plan to take a Swedish language course.

DH is a WAHD and I would like DS to go to a toddler class at some point. He absolutely loves seeing other kids and I know he'd really benefit from being around little ones at least once a week.

DD was in daycare last school year, when I was still teaching, and I just didn't have a good experience. If she is going to not be with me, than I want her some place where she will learn something, not just be entertained. Next school year, when she is three, I'm hoping for a Montessori school part time. DS will probably not go to daycare but some sort of school when he is three ish as well.

My 13 month old is far more extroverted than I am, and she loves to socialize. I think I'm going to put her in preschool starting at 2. Just a few hours a day, two or three days a week. She would go absolutely nuts for something like that, and I think she would really benefit from exposure to new situations and people.

If I had another parent who wanted to trade babysitting, I'd do that. But I'm not actively looking for it.

I'm semi SAHM now while I look for a new job. We opted to keep her in daycare two days a week. One of the days I'm off so I go over to the new house with my husband and the other I stay home to clean, pack etc.

We did this for a variety of reasons 1) so I can help with the final push of renovations/moving 2) I will eventually have a job again and she wil be back at daycare so we don't want her to lose the spot 3) since she will be going back we thought this will be the least disruptive to her. still be used to all the other kids and teachers, etc

I can definitely see the benefit of doing this. M is already so needy of me right now I can't imagine how much worse it would be if it was just me all the time giving her undivided attention. Also for those that are SAHM and have a cleaning lady come. Wouldn't it be just cheaper to put LO in daycare 1 day a week and do the cleaning yourself??

I think we're going to put LO 1 into part time daycare after LO 2 is born. I think it will give LO 1 socialization and plenty of activities that I won't be able to do because I will be attending to a newborn. Now it's not necessary because he still has my full attention and we do lots of activities every day.

i'm not a SAHM, but i work from home 3 days a week and the 2 days i'm in the office DS is with DH, my mom or MIL. sometimes i think about putting him in daycare one day a week(one that i'd be home, working) just so i can get not only my work done, but other work around the house and for him to socialize. but he's 5 1/2 months, so i don't know if it would be too soon for that. but then i think about how i'm working from home and having the moms watch him so that we didn't have to spend the money on daycare. torn, but most days i lean towards leaving him home.

Nope. Like @c.sassy, I feel like L gets enough socialization throughout the week (we go to church, attend playgroups, go to Mommy & me classes, etc). Plus, I get major separation anxiety if I'm away from her so I like to keep her with me all the time ;) Crazy momma!

We do plan on enrolling her in preschool when she's around 3, though.

Nope. We have enough friend/playgroup/church nursery time that I'm not worried about her social skills. I wouldn't mind a babysitting swap with someone so I could get some baby-free productive time once she gets older.

I plan on putting my LO in preschool either next year or the year after. It would only be two or three days a week in the mornings. We're also considering Montessori school, which have options for 5 days a week and full day. It costs about the same as daycare (if not more), and he will get the socialization he needs. If we opt for next year, he will be 2.5.

I think it's really important for socialization at around age 2. I notice a big difference in the sociability of the "daycare" kids vs the "SAHM" kids in my own family (including myself, I had a SAHM).

My kids (DD is 28 months; DS is 6.5 months) go to daycare two days a week right now. It was kind of left over from when I was working, but it also gives me a chance to work on schoolwork, get all my errands run, get the house cleaned, etc... I think we are quitting daycare in December, though; we'll put DD into preschool at 4, and then we'll wait until 2-3 to enroll DS. I'm really interested in possibly participating in a co-op preschool/nursery school at some point, so if we find a good one, the kids might do that until they are eligible for the private Catholic preschool we're interested in.

Daycare has been a positive experience for them, I think. I don't think it's necessary by any means, but it's been really good for the kids to experience new people, situations, and activities.

I wouldn't put her in daycare right now, but after I go back to work and get off on maternity leave for #2 (when that happens) I might want to leave her in daycare for 1 day a week. We'll see.

I have never heard of this before until HB!! Some moms have suggested daycare once their LO is older for socialization. I don't think it's actually necessary, but I do love the idea of having a day or two to myself a week.

other SAHMs are you putting your LO in daycare? At what age and how often?
