I spent the afternoon with my friend and her 5month old today and I was taken aback by how demanding he was. If he wasn't being entertained constantly, he got whingey. I have always wanted to be a SAHM (and am so sad we can't afford for me to give up work) but I have to say that my job is infinitely easier! I mean, I get to pee when I want, make a cup of tea when I want, have a conversation....!

@looch: agree w/everything you said.

I am a SAHM and I think I have it infinitely easier than WOHMs. I have the flexibility to do what I want during the day. I can go grocery shopping whenever, take a nap (while LO is napping) if I'm exhausted, run errands during random times, etc. Not saying being a mom/watching LO is easy (because that part can be challenging), but the flexibility definitely makes it so much easier. Also, SAHMs typically wear one 'major' hat - mom - while WOHMs have to wear two - mom and employee.

Plus, I don't see being w/my LO as 'work.' It's definitely challenging and frustrating at times spending 24/7 w/a toddler, but it's not work in the same sense as writing briefs, meeting w/clients, etc.

I don't think being a SAHM is easy. But whenever I see people at the beach I get jealous.

It is easier in some aspects, but it is like having a job that never never get off of. I love staying at home, but some days I wish I could have a break. Some people don't realize what a SAHM actually does.

I've only gotten those comments from people who don't have children. The ones that do know how hard it is to be a parent - working in or outside the home. Recently, I had a friend make a comment that she wishes she could stay home so she could take naps like me. Same friend and her DH also offered to babysit, and when we proposed a night said they couldn't after all because they hadn't had a date night that week, and they're "sure we would understand." We had had one date in 7 months.

I'm a WAHM, and there are times where friends or family members will assume that my schedule is more flexible than it is because I work from home.. and that isn't the case for me.

I get a lot of "we'll it's not like you have to do anything!!" comments from those who either don't understand what my job entails, or don't understand that LO is a full time job, either.

I can see being jealous that your office for the day was the beach! Not saying it wasn't work but it's nice that a SAHM can have a change of scenery? I like what @looch said, too.

No, all of my friends and family know how hard it is to take care of a child full time. The not being beholden to a schedule is such a huge benefit. Even when I feel mentally unchallenged and think about getting a part time job, my biggest reason not to is that we'd lose all of this unscheduled time. I love it.

I will be curious to see what happens when I have my own little ones, when I tell people I am a nanny they often react in a way that suggests it must be the hardest job ever- I get a full nights sleep though and go home at the end of the day (don't get me wrong, sometimes it is hard but mostly I love it enough to ignore the hard parts :-) )

@Foodnerd81: Yeah I agree with this.

My husband always says he wishes he could make a living off of just taking care of our home. It's hard, back breaking work to fix things around the house, but he doesn't wish for it because it's less work. He finds taking care of his home so much for rewarding than his job.

I think this is sort of similar. I would much rather be running around all day after my child than dealing with clients at my job.

@Foodnerd81: Ditto. I'd rather be frustrated corralling LO any day of the week over being bored and/or stressed out at work.

I never comment on pictures with things that are jealous/nasty though. I just keep the thoughts to myself :)

I am back at work now, but I am the first to admit my life was easy peasy when I was at home, not because taking care of my son was easy (not at all, he hardly slept) but because I wasn't prisoner to a schedule. If he slept late, no problem. Now, I have to wake him up to get him dressed and ready for day care. I could do laundry whenever we needed to, grocery shop whenever, etc. Yes, some days we went to the pool and it was work, but it's nothing like preparing for a meeting when the phone is ringing and you have deadlines. They're just different.

I'll admit, I've seen SAHMs post fun pictures of things they are doing on weekdays and been jealous. But it's not because I think they are just relaxing and hanging out like they are on spring break-- I know it's a lot of work-- it's because I would much prefer the work of bringing my child to a new and interesting place and getting to experience it with them than do whatever mundane task I was distracting myself from by Facebooking at work. Hopefully my massive run-on sentence makes sense! I'll be a SAHM next year and am looking forward to those kinds of things, but not because I think it will be easy!

Once I posted a picture of LO at the beach on a Monday morning. Everyone got soooo jealous that I was at the beach. And I do admit, it's awesome to get to do things like that on the weekdays.... but it's still work for me.

Especially that particular day. First LO threw a fit because she didn't want sunscreen. Then she threw a fit on the playground. And then even though she never wants to be held or go in her stroller, she decided that she didn't want to walk after we had already started our walk to the pier. So I had to carry a 28 lb toddler for a very long way.

I think when people see the beach they think relaxation and laying in the sun. I did none of those things.
