All the time when we are home. My almost 3-year-old loves to "read book" (more like we read to him), play puzzles, and draw (more like scribbles). I've been reading him books and showing him flash cards since he was able to sit up and be interested. I think that's helped with his love for books. And I'd like to believe that's the reason why he doesn't really watch TV. I used to have it on all the time and he could care less for it.

@shellio: I remember not having a clue when LO was 3 months! I thought I should be doing more, but babies that age don't really do too much. It's so hard when you are responsible for a LO, you just want to do what's best for them, but we don't always know what that is. Sounds like your husband is an awesome daddy!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: Your dog looks like mine!

I work outside of the home but DH is a SAHD. Our LO is only 3 mos old but he feels lots of pressure to do educational activities with him all the time. I keep telling him not to worry about that and to just enjoy the time with him, hopefully I'm helping him relax a bit. I agree that babies learn through play, and we do read with him a lot, we both love to read and hope to instill that in our son. We also read to him from things we're reading. (He loves the NY Times, LOL!)

@abbydabbydoodlebug: Lol, I know! It's super cute though :)

@Andrea: That makes me feel better! I feel like everyone has a different way of learning things, and I'm pretty sure flash cards right now just won't do the trick for my LO. She'll only learn what they taste like.

We will start a more structured approach at 18 months. It will include matching and pairing activities as well as sensory play. I will use flash cards at a later age to reinforce spelling and math if needed.
I have the time and as long as DS is interested, we will do it.

I let LO play and "read" books on her own. I'll read with her, point things out and tell her what they are.. Going to have to step it up now that she's 1!

@artbee: people have suggested flashcards to me but all the LO has ever wanted to do is throw them around every where. i tried them for a little bit but i don't think the LO has learned anything from them yet. i feel like she's learns so much just from me talking to her. i explain things and use descriptive language. she just repeats everything i say and learns that way. i also like to take her to different places all the time to increase the amount of exposure she has to different things and types of people.

@artbee: haha, yeah the "eating everything in sight" isn't too helpful when you're trying to drill them on "Cat" ;)

@abbydabbydoodlebug: Thanks! I agree, flash cards are fine. I just don't feel like they're for me. I think I'd get bored with them, and really LO would just try to eat them.

I'm all about a "learn through play" process, especially when they are little. As we are playing with cars, blocks, books, etc. I'll point out what color, shape, sound the things make. I feel like that's enough until they get old enough to start "really" learning, to identify letters and numbers and such. I don't think flashcards are bad or anything like that. If you like to use flashcards, then use them! But I don't think you're doing anything wrong by not using them. Sounds like you're a great momma! :)

I feel like babies learn by play.... and that's pretty much all we do. Of course I read books (or try to while she's eating them), point things out to her, sing songs, etc. I have a friend who does flashcards with her baby and have done that from day one. But i feel like she's a baby, I want her to have fun while she can, and learn while she's doing it.
