I have been feeling this a lot lately, I think because my LO is 15 months and really starting to push boundaries. Being a SAHM mom is super hard and I'm not as happy doing it. I do think that finding a job either full time or part time doing something that I would really love would be the perfect thing for me. Maybe in the new year after all the holiday stress is over!

I'm not a SAHM anymore, but I did for 19 months. I went back to work because we needed the extra income, but also because I was really unhappy being a SAHM. Being SAHP is really really hard, but I think some people (men and women) are really cut out for it and enjoy it, but I didn't. I'm grateful I got to see E's big milestones first-hand, but if I could do it over again I would have gone back much sooner. I'm a much more patient mother (and wife) because of it. I'm frazzled a lot, and barely have time to think these days (thanks to D's later schedule), but overall I'm so much happier. And E is absolutely *thriving* in daycare in ways that he just wouldn't with me.

My job was working as a toddler room teacher! 9 adorable, mostly sweet monsters for 11 hours a day. I thought one baby of mine would be a cakewalk after that, but I didn't factor in 24/7/365 shifts with no adult interactions!

Yes! When mine was about 18 months old, I thought, OK! Time for a part time job! This shit is intolerable! Then my mother in law moved here, started taking care of my girl a day or two a week, and I got a little balance back. Life is awesome now.

@plantains: aww thanks! My office was full of WOHMs who would talk about how SAHMs just played tennis all day and had all this free time. It annoyed me then too since I stayed at home two days a week. But now I think it gets to me more since I feel like I am working my ass off! (To be fair, I am still working from home ten hours a week.)

Having done both, I think it's fair to say that being a parent is just plain hard no matter how you do it.

Nope lol, though I do have days where I wish I lived near family members or had trusted friends who could babysit if I needed a break. I've never had a day or night away from my daughter (only a couple hours a handful of times). Unfortunately, I have no "village" here but I am working on it - it is just hard to get close to other sahms because we are all busy and when we get together half the time is spent chasing toddlers around! Getting there slowly.. I never dream about going back to work though haha no thanks.

@illumina: Is it possible you can get a day here or there with a babysitter so you get some time off? I have some SAHM friends who all split a babysitter and they each get 1 full day a week of the sitter---and they are free to make appointments, get hair done, pedicures, go to the gym, grocery shop--whatever.

@jedeve: As a WOHM, I am not at all offended, and I definitely believe that it cold feel much harder because the weekends with a toddler as affirmation that all day everyday would be soooooo tough.

As a parent that has been a SAHM and a WOHM, I don't understand why it has to be all or nothing...whatever happened to the idea that it takes a village to raise a child? It's okay to have people that you pay in your village, it's okay to have family help with your child.

Yeah but then the next day is better :) I did think toddlerdom would be easier than it has been - I imagined more independent play...and more napping.

My son now goes to school part time (9-3) 2 days a week. He's 2.5. That gives us both the break we need. A newborn is coming though so about to start all over again.

I feel this way most Monday's, but I'm usually good by Tuesday afternoon :)
I would love to work part time, but finding a part time job in my field near where we live isn't easy. My husband only gets to see DD and hour or two a day, so I would want to have a somewhat flexible schedule. The days are long but the weeks/months/years are short.

"..why spend time going through that when someone else could be looking after her?"

^^ this is exactly what I struggle with.

I WOHM PT after my first. My attitude was definitely that I did all the stuff a SAHM did PLUS working 24 hours a week. And while that is partially true - DH and I were still 100% in charge of raising my kids and taking care of our house, staying at home is more work than I anticipated. I have to clean more because my toddler is home making messes more. I have to cook more because we are eating meals at home more. I have to do more diapers and more nap time routines and all that somewhat tedious stuff more.

I have to admit that a lot of times I wonder what the point of me staying home is. I don't believe daycare is bad for kids. I get tired of hearing how "lucky"I am. I was miserable in my job and daycare cost too much. And I am working hard. But I feel like if I talk about how it is harder and more work for me, I will offend WOHMs. I just wish I believed there was some big reason k should be at home. But right now it's just what works for our family for a lot of little reasons.

Something that has really helped me, is finding a part time job. I was a teacher, so I just started tutoring. I tutor on Saturdays and it works out nicely. I get a little break, make a little (and I mean LITTLE) money, and DH gets one on one time with the kiddos. This helps me on those super tough days, that and wine. Wine helps. Of course wine brings more children (at least in my life!), so the cycle continues... ;)
