I am a WOHM already, but my friend just did exactly this. When a full time spot opened, she took advantage and enrolled her son and is now looking for a job. Insanely expensive yes, but it was the only way she could guarantee she'd have child care when she found a job.

I'm not working until my youngest is in kindergarten. But if I had to I would find a job first. I have family here to help.

I had help from my parents, so I went back to work and then organized the day care situation.

@Silva: I might could do that. When I put him on the list there was a 6 month wait list. Today when I talked to them she said there was one spot and she needed to know ASAP if we wanted it. There aren't many daycares around us either :(

@lovehoneybee: yeah I'm just concerned about the money. But I always am ;) haven't talked to DH about it yet either though he knows the situation. He said we will discuss it tonight when he gets home. I'm sure we could do it but it would be tight.

It never would have occurred to me to put LO in daycare/have childcare before finding a job, but it makes sense! Especially considering that looking for a job is a full time job, basically, and with interviews being scheduled, etc, it would be really tough to have to find last minute care, even though we have family nearby.

My situation was a little bit different. I was applying for a civil service job, and kept him at home while I was taking the exams, and my ILs watched him while I went for the interview. It ended up being a two-month process, but most of it was just waiting.

In the meantime, I made a list of daycares we were interested in, but because I was on the list for 6 counties we really had to wait until I had an offer somewhere and just hope that one of the centers on our list for that area had an opening, because D works non-traditional hours and we wanted E's center to be close to wherever I ended up.

We were really, really lucky, because as soon as I got the call telling me that I would be offered a job pending official state approval I called the first one on our list for that area, and they had an immediate opening. He starts on Monday. The way things turned out I would have been had a month or so to find child care, though.

I think if you can swing it financially and this is the place you really want to put him I'd go ahead and enroll him now.

I put DD in daycare and then started looking. Looking for work can be pretty time consuming with many rounds of interviews for each role so I wasn't sure how I would have managed that without child care since we have no family around to help. Luckily, it only took me 2 months to find a job.

Interested to see the responses. I'm planning to start looking for jobs a couple months before I anticipate any openings at the centers we are waiting for. I figure I can tell the job a start date more easily than I can tell the childcare. Our back up is an in home provider who is flexible.

Have you asked the childcare if you can identify a start date- maybe they would hold your spot for a couple weeks which might give you an opportunity to get further along in your job search?

Yep we enrolled our LO in daycare and I am actively searching for a job. There's just no way for me to interview while also taking care of my LO. Interviews in my line of work are 5+ hrs long. If we didn't have daycare, my husband would have to watch her (we have no family in the area that could help) and that is just not possible for him to take so much time off.

For those SAHM who went back to work, did you enroll your LO in daycare before applying or getting hired?

The daycare DS was on a wait list for said he could start now. However I'm just starting to look at jobs. Not sure if I should go ahead and put him in. It always seems like there is a wait list and I don't want to get a job and have no child care for DS. However it is expensive with only income right now!
