Thanks everyone! It seems like the consensus is A) these long naps with short wake time between will be short lived (sad!) and B) to get out of the house, it's better to just do one good nap & one shorter car nap.

@MusicaV: When LO was younger she would stay asleep in the infant seat but now if I bring it in, or even open the car door, she will almost always wake up.

@mrbee: @oliviaoblivia: She's never slept in a stroller mostly because we have to drive everywhere. I wouldn't be able to go from place to place with the stroller... and I would still have to drive home even if I could!

@illumina: I do love the length of her naps so I hope they don't shorten anytime soon! I agree about activities starting awkward times. There was about a month when she was on 3 naps that we would go to an activity between naps but I don't think that is going to work anymore :(

@Beyond2: Sounds exactly like us! Except nothing will keep LO awake if she's ready to go to sleep!

@Mrs. Lion: You are brave to experiment to find that out! I feel like, as many are saying, these long naps & short wake time is probably going to be short lived so I'm not sure if it's worth messing with it.

I would run errands as early as possible, especially with grocery shopping and if it's almost nap time I kept him awake as much as I can all the way home. I tried not to go out for more than ah hour. I have also stroller napped and never got too much out of that... like an hour or so? Just really depends. And transferring to crib was impossible. They say not to let your infant sleep in the car seat but, well, I did. If he fell asleep in his car seat on the way home I would slowly carry him into the house and put him in the office with a monitor on so I can at least hear him if he wakes up. We have french glass doors so I can also see his movements. I did this with both of my boys. I definitely don't miss it. :) Going to one nap is SO nice...

Now, here in Asia, I see TONS of moms pushing sleeping infants and toddler all day long! Even at night...late at night. I guess a lot of them just go with it! I don't know how they do it!

I prioritize the morning nap- we don't go anywhere before it, and it's very rare for me to wake her from it (only if we have an actual appointment, like a doctor's appt, and even those I schedule to be later than she usually wakes up. Usually if she gets a good morning nap, even if they afternoon nap gets messed up a little she is OK.

Like others said, if we have something to do in between naps, I make a point to be ready to go when she wakes up-- get her dressed before, me all dressed and packed up, then she wakes up, I feed her, change diaper, and out the door. She doesn't fall asleep in the car on short trips, and we don't actually drive that often (live in a walking city) but if she does fall asleep in the car, what I do depends on how long she's been sleeping, what else we have to do... She rarely transfers from car to house (the 2 brightly lit flights of stairs don't help), so sometimes I just pull over on the street and let her sleep in the car (pulling into the garage usually wakes her). But her afternoon nap is usually an hour, often less, so I don't mind waiting the 20 minutes.

Errands that will take longer I like to leave for after 2nd nap, since she is usually awake longer then. BUT I can see how that would backfire, like if she fell asleep in the car at 6, it would mess up bedtime more...

We tried to really stick to having the first nap at home. The second could be shorter, and we would often run closer errands after the second nap before DH came home. But there's hope! Once LO moved to one nap, she was magically able to transfer from car to crib. Maybe yours will too.

@daniellemybelle: we usually get out between the naps. I have her dressed before her nap, and then during her nap I get everything ready. So she wakes up (takes a few minutes for her to transition), and we're out the door.
We live in a fairly small area, so we don't go anywhere longer than a fifteen minute drive- so usually we can get home before she falls asleep.

She typically has 3 or 3.5 hours between morning and afternoon nap. Occasionally she's fallen asleep in the car- when she was younger a transfer never worked. Now that she is older, it does, which is great- or if its too early for her nap, I just get her up and we play or eat lunch and then she goes back down again.

Oh- and i can only take her in the stroller immediately after her nap, or else she falls asleep and things get crazy. So if I want to run or go for a walk, we go immediately after she wakes up from her afternoon nap (same thing- I get myself totally ready, and then she just has to wake up and we go).

Fr us transfers only work if he has been asleep at least 10 minutes but less than 20 (yes, trial and error and a lot of ruined naps) We go out inbetween naps almost every day. I try to stay close to home, but if he does fall asleep in the car i let him sleep the 10 minutes ans he transfers pretty easily after that. If he has been asleep more than 20 minutes though, forget it.

She naps at 10 and 3. We go out every day from 12/12:30-2. It was definitely trickier when she was younger and had shorter awake times, but we just tried to be really organized and run one errand per day.

We had the two nap schedule and live 30 minutes from stores too. It was hard. I'd just do one errand, super fast and hand toys back to him all the way home to try to keep him awake. The best bet was taking someone like my mom with us so she could keep him awake on the ride home. If he fell asleep the nap was blown...as soon as the car stopped moving he'd wake and wouldn't nap again and then he'd be over tired for his second nap and fight it. Now that we're on one nap trips out are easier, but honestly I still miss two naps!

We planned around naps, but we also never drove anywhere so everywhere we went was within a 10 minute walk, so we could easily get home. I really only worried about staying home for his first nap--he often took his 2nd in the stroller.

So jealous!

Honestly. I would try to preserve them. Reason being that I doubt she will take two naps of that length for long before they shorten and a bit OR her wake time increases. Also, if you ever have a second LO, he or she probably won't get this glorious option, and you will have no choice but to wing it daily (us)!

Around 6mths or just over, LO's awake time stretched to 3 hrs or 4 before bed so you might not be far off getting some extra time. Around this time also she started napping much less during the day, so now at 7mths she takes 2x 1-1.5hr naps. Getting out is getting better. We let her have a first good nap at home and then go out right after she wakes up and if we're not back within 3hrs she takes her 2nd nap in the ergo or maybe the car. It is tough...I've given up going to activities because they always start at an awkward time for babies on 2 naps, I find.

I used to plan around her naps. DD was also in the 2 2-3 hour nap crew. It was easier for me because everything I need is within walking distance and if I was running late she'd just get a stroller nap and I'd get even more done. Will you LO sleep in the stroller?

We pretty much plan around naps, too. A takes two 1 - 1.5 hour naps and can stay awake about 3 to 3 1/2 hours between them at 10 months old. Before the first nap, I try not to go anywhere that is too far from the house so he doesn't have time to fall asleep. And I always make sure he has a toy in his carseat to keep him busy. After he has had his first nap he usually stays up a bit longer so we can venture further out, but I definitely still keep an eye on the clock. If he falls asleep for 5-10 minutes in the car, I just keep him up a little longer than normal and still lay him down for his next nap and he usually falls asleep.

I plan my day around her naps. Luckily they are only about an hour each so its not like they suck up a ton of time and 3-4 hours is plenty of time to get things done. If she is stimulated she can also stretch out the time between naps just fine. She doesn't stroller nap, but she isn't in one long enough, but she will sleep in the car which helps. (Though I am not the mom who sits in the car and waits for her to wake up. I would much rather just get her out and into her own bed or call it a short nap.)

I feel like this everyday - everything is planned around her 2 naps. But ours are only 1 hr each, so I can't even imagine the downside (AND the upside) of 2.5 hr naps! What I try to do now is get everything I can prepped and ready to go before she's awake. I don't do a whole lot that takes longer than 20 min. to drive to, make lists of to do's and what I'll need to buy, and order a lot of things online now.

When LO was still in the infant seat, I just brought him inside in the seat and left him until he woke up, although it was never longer than 45 minutes. If he falls asleep in the car now, I bring him inside and put him on my bed. He'll usually sleep for at least an hour, and I get rest too!

That was me :) if I was for a long time (like over 4 hours), it was almost better so she could just nap in the ergo. Otherwise, i only stayed out for 2 hours at a time so she could nap at home in her crib.

She's 2 now and I'm still really protective of her sleep (maybe even more so, because there's nothing g worse than a cranky, tired toddler). I make sure I'm always home by 1230pm so I can put her down for a nap at home.

We are very lucky and can transfer her from the car to the crib. It didn't happen immediately, but once she was 10- months or so it started working. I take her shoes off as I'm getting her out of the car and take her straight to her room. The only catch is she often could use a diaper change...I skip it or she wakes up. Overall it is still much easier to go with her schedule and stick close to home.

...How do you go do anything?

I am NOT complaining that LO has consolidated her naps & is taking two 2.5 hour naps a day in her crib. It's amazing & I don't want to mess it up! There's just no way I can run errands & then sit with her in the grocery store parking lot for 2.5 hours because she fell asleep & will wake up if I get her out.

When we were on 3 naps I would just let her take a 1-hour nap on the way out (sitting in the car for 30 min or so when we arrived), run errands for her 2 hours of wake time, and a 1-hour nap on the way home (sitting in the car in the driveway for 30 mins again). I have attempted doing this again (waking her up at the 1 hr mark) but it has messed up her sleep that night / the next day so I really need to stick to her 2 long naps.

Her wake time in between naps is about 2.5 hours, but after the 2 hour mark she's on the road to sleepiness, and the car always puts her to sleep so if I go out between naps I would have to make the entire trip less than 2 hours or she'll fall asleep in the car. Actually it would need to be more like 1.5 hours when you account for feeding her & getting her ready to go. Everything is at least 20-30 minutes away so this is really challenging! I could only do one short errand in that window of time, and trying to do an activity like story time is out of the question.

I'm wondering if I should just try to figure out how to transfer her to the crib successfully? I just feel like from everyone I've talked to, that is darn near impossible for 99% of babies.
