@daniellemybelle: no I don't think it had any negative effect on potty training? He just had to get used to using it outside.

Not a SAHM, but I WAHM and we did a loose three day method over the course of a Wed-Sun when I was home around the clock with DS. We didn't stay home the entire though, even in the first three days.

We wanted to expose him to all potties (potty ring, his own, and public) and still went out for hour long outings, etc. He was a few months past 2 when we officially trained, but he was holding it for 2 hours pretty much from the get go. Being that we have a son, we keep an empty bottle in the car for emergencies we've maybe used a handful of times if we can't get to a place with a public restroom, but that's been rare.

I thought about buying a travel potty but we're in the 'burbs and most places we hang out at have public restrooms and DS does fine in those.

Thanks for all the responses!

@hilsy85: Do you feel like using the travel potty complicated it or made the process take longer?

We are in the midst of this right now. We just did a 3 day stay at home bootcamp. (pretty much cold-turkey to underwear). I'm going majorly stir-crazy so we finally went out to the park today. I had the little floor potty in the back of the SUV just in case because the only bathroom at the park is a port-a-potty which sounded tough. She stayed dry until getting home and went in the potty when we got home. I think this afternoon I'm going to take her to Target just to get out and also to sit her on the toilet there as practice.

ETA: I'm glad we stayed home for 3 days. It's been warm out so we put the water toys on the deck and played outside and ate popsicles for 3 days. She was able to go bare-bottomed until she had really "gotten it". She only had one major accident the whole time. I think being out would have resulted in many more accidents and fewer chances for positive reinforcement.

We use a travel potty (the potette). There was no way I could stay home for days at a time--I would go insane. We were out and about on the first day LO was in underwear, I just had the travel potty with me. It's a stand alone potty that has a bag in it so they can use it where ever.

@MamaBehr: we did too...we missed a window at 2.5 years old, so we trained at 3.

Whenever I go anywhere, the first place I look for is always the bathroom.

We waited and waited and waited to potty train. With my daughter, I knew she was ready when she said "mommy, I have to go potty" and I said "go in your diaper." She never really had any accidents. With my son, we waited just as much, and one day I just put underpants on him. He stayed dry all day!

If you wait long enough, you should be good. But, I would bring extra underpants and clothing, just in case. I do have a portable potty, but I've only needed it once. You could just make sure that wherever you go, those first few days, have an easily accessible potty.

This is the main reason we haven't potty trained yet. I hate the thought of staying in so much! Interested to hear what others do!

If you SAH with your LO, but you are not really "at home," meaning you are out & about most days, how do you handle potty training? Did you do "potty training boot camp" and stay home until your LO had the hang of it? Did you try to potty train on the go with a portable potty seat or something similar? How did your LO do with going potty in different environments - especially places like parks or the zoo where there may not be a bathroom right there when they need it? Or what about longer rides in the car?
