I plan on doing some freelance design work while they are little and then work for myself when they're in school. Fortunately it's not hard to come and go in my field.

I was a nanny before, which I don't see going back to. It was frustrating enough having to do things I disagreed with before. Now that I've been the parent and made the decisions, I wouldn't have the patience for dealing with new parents. We actually hope to homeschool, but whether we do or not I'm planning to start a cookie business. It'll just be more full-time if she's in school. DH's job can have us move at any time, so getting a "real" job is problematic. Plus, honestly, I hate working outside the home. Being a SAHM and housewife makes me happy, and DH makes enough that any work I do is almost pointless. (He pays more in taxes than I've ever made.)

@Tanjowen: What sort of education/experience do you need to do something like this? I have looked into the guardian ad litem program...is it similar?

I'll go back into teaching so I can be home when the kiddos are home and we get summers off.

I'm not a sahm, I work 0.7 of full time as a teacher, but when my kid(s) are in school I want to retrain as a science communicator and hopefully work for a museum or a science organisation. I would say I have about another 5 years in the classroom before I'm done!

I really don't know! I don't see myself going back to what I did before, but could see myself doing some related freelancing work. The DH's career is going, he is likely to continue to have long, and sometimes unpredictable hours, so it will work best for us for me to continue to have a lot of flexibility, which makes freelancing seem like a good option.

But who knows really. I have about 5 years before we get there.

I want to become a CASA (court appointed special advocate) when my LO enters school full-time! I worked FT for years in the court system and love it, and I think there is a big need for good people to advocate for those forced to go through the justice system for whatever reason.

My sister was a SAHM mom from high school until her kids got into school, and then at 30 years old, went to undergrad, then on to pharmaceutical school, and is now a pharmacist and loves it. When I worry sometimes about what will happen when I no longer am raising kids, I look at her and realize anything is possible

I keep pondering this as well. I taught and was a nanny before having a baby and I don't see myself going back to either one. The things that I am considering would require getting a master's degree which I am very open to but I ideally only want to work part time once my children are in school so it's really hard to justify the cost. So I am keeping my eyes and ears open for ideas but it will be a few years before I am ready- like ideally another 6-7 so I have time to figure it out unless something changes in our current situation.

Will you go back to work doing what you did pre-kids? Find an entirely new career? Get just a part time job? Not go back to work at all?

I have no clue what I am going to do in a few years once both of my kids are in school. I have a degree but never actually went into it before having kids. I was always a nanny for the most part, but I won't go back to that. I know I have time to think about it, but I really wish I had a better idea.
