@daniellemybelle: You should look up OrangeTheory fitness if they have it in your new city. They don't have childcare, but they do have early/evening classes and you get your first 1-2 classes free. It's an hour, and I love it. I told T we were making room in the budget for it.

I'm the type that hates going to the gym, and I love this class. Strength and cardio rolled into one, plus the trainers are super friendly.

@kjpugs: Haha I <3 you girl, but I don't even know what you mean! :) Naps are definitely hit or miss for us as well and as much as I don't want to accept it, over the next year we may start to have some no nap days :crying: So I definitely want to make our mornings our "busy" time and then the afternoon can be more chill. Run errands or just hang out in the house. It is going to be hottest in the afternoon anyway. I going to sign her up for The Little Gym (bye bye money) and her class will be at 9:15am so that will work out nicely. I've joined a couple local FB mommy groups and all their playdates are mid-morning and they have lunch together.

@mole: Seriously, I would love my own treadmill. I think if I commit to this I could see it being worth it to spring for one but I am not even sure where we would put it.

@Keybee: Totally. :) Right now I am 100% sedentary so I don't judge and I think it's great that you walk! I need a change.

I found a barre studio with classes at 815pm, so I go after my husband gets home. On the weekends, I try to get away for one 830am class, and my husband gets some one-on-one time to hang out with my son.

The biggest game changer for me, though, was buying my own treadmill. I either use it in the morning before my husband goes to work or during my kid's nap. I try to do at least 30 min everyday, and I love being able to watch netflix while I workout!

Something I thought about... depending how she naps, afternoon might be more hit/miss. I know E can sometimes be up and ready to go by 1:15 or she can sleep til after 3. I personally would rather do the workout in the AM so I could shower during her nap (UNLESS the gym had nice showers!!!) Maybe prioritize which you'd rather do (enriching stuff or gym) and do that in the AM, as that'll be more regular, and then do the other stuff in the afternoon. You might also want to see when activities through local mom groups or friends you make are. I know when we did Gymboree, granted that was the weekend, but it was typically AM. It will probably also be cooler in the AM. So yeah I probably just changed my mind mid-reply. I would schedule the AM and then make the gym more flexible post nap, and shower there- but keep plans flexible as you get to know your new city!

Thanks everyone! I tried to write out responses to all of you but it was getting crazy long. :)

I think realistically if I want to do some of the activities I'm interested in that are around 10 / 10:30, we are just not going to make it to the gym that day unless we rush to get out the door really early OR we really push nap time. So, I think a couple days per week we'll do an activity at 9am & go to the gym after, and then the other days we'll alternate going to the gym and an activity. So for example Monday & Wednesday will be activity + gym days, Tuesday I'll just go the gym, Thursday we'll do an activity, Friday I'll go to the gym. And the next week, Monday & Wednesday stay the same, and we'll do an activity on Tuesday & Friday and go to the gym on Thursday. Except for one gymnastics class, everything else is free or drop-in so there's no issue with going every other week.

I feel good about this plan because I'll still get to the gym 3-4 times per week, we'll have a set routine for at least two days of the week, and we can have some flexibility the other days. I'm sure some days we'll just stay home or run an errand - my personality is that I need to kind of set the bar high, knowing I will probably not reach it, but it gives me motivation :)

@daniellemybelle: this is a little late but I do a stroller workout class three times a week and it's great! The program in my area only meets at certain times so I'm not sure if it would work with your schedule but the class incorporates having your LO with you while you work out and it is a really good work out! Not sure if they have it in your area or not. Wall me if you want the name of the program but you should be able to just google stroller workout class! Good luck! Working out while working full time and having a LO has always been a struggle for me!

You should check the gym's schedule because at least at my gym childcare isn't available all day.

LO wakes up at 7:30 and naps at 11:30, so I prefer to do things in the morning that are close by (so he doesn't fall asleep in the car), and that don't require a shower (to save time). The gym is perfect! I definitely consider it our morning activity (he enjoys playing with the toys and other kids).

I only go twice a week, but I run and/or go to Stroller Strides one other morning most weeks. I like to mix it up for both of us.

I go on the weekends and on holidays that DH has off of work. While I'm at the gym on the weekends DH will watch DS for the hour or so it takes. He usually takes him to the library or to the park to play. During the week I usually just do a light workout during DS's naps.

So I have two Littles. 3 years old and 1 and a half. We HAVE to do an activity for them in the morning or else they don't nap. And i NEED them to nap so I can work from home.

We're really lucky that there's a county run program available to us that has 8 free classes for the 3 year old every month and 5 classes for the 1 year old. Those are all scheduled before the first of the month. Each week on Sunday I go in and fill in the days without class with other activities (library, park playdate, etc. This morning we're going to do crafts with a friend at a park).

THEN I go through and fill in when I'm going to the gym. If I have time to make it to a class at the gym before they have their activities that's ideal. Otherwise I fill it in as I can.

It works for us. I make it to the gym usually 5 times a week. (They go to daycare at the gym)

@daniellemybelle: I think t would be best for you to write out your weekly schedule.
So you want to enroll LO in classes, say you do a music class Monday's at 10am, and library story time Wednesday's at 10am.
Then you can pencil into your schedule: gym Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 9am.
It doesn't have to be everyday! Especially as you incorporate doing more active things with LO! Like one of my favorite activities and J loves it too, is bike rides. I have the bike seat that sits on the back of my bike so he's close enough that we can talk the whole time. And we typically do a nice two-mile bike to a local park, so we both get something out of it. I find it fairly easy to stay active with my son as long as I don't let us stay cooped up in the house all day. The other option is doing a quick 20-minut gym dvd during nap time. I'm not a fan of home workouts only cause I live in an apartment and have very limited space but if you have the room it's easy to do.

Also you mentioned having to clean up after workouts before going to do other things? I don't! If I workout at 9am, I'm done around 10, and I want to take him to the park- we just go! Then get home for lunch, and put him down for a nap, and during his nap I take a shower.

I hope this is helpful :) I was pretty excited to be a sahm this summer to get back into my gym routine too. It's very important to me. It does help the J loves the gym daycare. I hope your lo takes to it well!

I have 2 and my younger one still has a morning nap so it's a little different but we usually go between his nap and lunch so around 10 or 10:30. They get a snack in the car. Honestly I think it would be too much to have a class or something and the gym back-to-back. Normally we go when the weather is lousy or we have been super busy and I need a break! I have found that too many activities can be exhausting for my guys and sometimes they just want to play with their own toys at home. My younger one also has separation issues so my gym visits are short. I think I get more exercise pushing them around our hilly streets in the double stroller!

@daniellemybelle: i like doing the early activity and then going to the gym, since having that commitment gets us out of the house. it's too easy to skip the gym if it's the first thing :) BUT there are only two activities we can do that early (a storytime and a music class), so the other days, it's not an option. totally depends on your personality, but i also really like having a day or two a week with nothing planned in the morning, and we go to the gym around 1030 or 11 (sometimes will meet friends at the park before or after, but totally low-key). it's nice to be able to let LO sleep in, take her time eating/getting dressed, and no pressure if we are moving too slow. and she really does have fun at the gym daycare -- free play is great for kids too!

I am not going to the gym right now because I'm 29 weeks pregnant, but I started working out pretty regularly when DD2 was 12 weeks old, and I went whenever DH wasn't at work. So either before he went in or after he got off, and then on his days off. I tried to go 4-5 days a week. That is also my plan again for when I start to go once this baby is born (I will probably start at 12 weeks post partum). I don't feel like it takes away from family time too much since it's only 1.5 hours out of the day and it makes me a much happier, more energetic person. It's better for all of us.

@KayKay: You make it sound simple! :) What has been easier for you - going before or after? If I end up joining the gym I am thinking we will join (great reviews, national chain, 5 min from our house) the childcare does not allow food. :( They have a cafe though, so I could pack a lunch and sit in there and feed her while I have a smoothie or something.

@jhd: LO usually sleeps until 7:30 or so but I am just really not about getting up at like 5am...

@Mrs. Yoyo: She very well may not. She hates separation. That's one of the reasons I am going to cut back on work and not try to start her in a new daycare in TX. I guess I am just trying to think positive here ;) I will say she LOVES older kids so the mixed ages may be to my/her/our benefit.

I guess we could go after her nap but I just have this mental image of being super productive/active in the morning, getting back home, getting her down for a nap, getting work done will she naps, her getting up and playing or watching a little TV while I do housework and start dinner... while wearing high heels and pearls... hahaha.

@jh524: Thanks! :)

@rosegold: I think it will be hard to avoid lunchtime if we are trying to do an activity AND go to the gym before her nap! I think I could feed her on the go though.

@daniellemybelle: good for you for making time to exercise! You will feel amazing once you've completed a workout for the day! I'm a fitness instructor and I teach all my weekly classes at 8:30-9:30am. I drop lo off at daycare (not a gym daycare) at 8 and pick up at 10am. It's really worked out great and he gets that socializing aspect and play time without mommy, which is really important. I would start with 1 hour and the first few times are harder on mommy than lo!! Good luck and have fun exercising!!

I hope your LO warms up to the gym daycare! My kids have been so fickle with it that I try to go when we have our helper even though it cuts into my work time. I tried it last week when I had LO and I got about 30 mins before he flipped out because some other mom came in who looked like me, apparently :-(

That said I would probably do it when LO is well-rested (morning or after nap) to boost your chances of success.

@daniellemybelle: depends on the your gym's childcare and timing of your activities, but what has worked best for me is:

- find an activity around 9-930ish. we had a music class then, so we could go to the class, then hit the gym, and be home for lunch.
- find an activity around 11, and do the same as above except gym first (either no shower after or shower at gym, depending on timing!), then class, then home for lunch.
- do an activity in the morning and then i do a noon yoga class. the babysitter at the gym daycare actually likes when the kids bring food (likely so she has to do less!), so i just pack lunch for my older LO so she eats there.

i do some combination of all of the above each week...and usually a day or two of no activities in the morning too :)

@daniellemybelle: Not sure how old your LO is, but when DD was roughly 16 months - 2 years, the gym in the morning was enough of an activity. If I tried to take her to storytime or something afterward, she tended to be a little crankier/overstimulated. Now that DD is well over 2 and almost 3, she can totally handle the gym + another activity.
My ideal day is to go to the gym from 9-10 and then have an activity at 10:30 or so to go to. Sometimes she goes to the gym daycare for 90 minutes because she really gets a lot of stimulation there from older kids and I believe in just having free play time to play with all different toys than she has at home.

@daniellemybelle: We have the same problem! I do activities every morning with my two year old - gymboree, playgroups, zoo if it's warm, children's museum if it's cold, playdates etc., and I don't feel comfortable cancelling all her morning activities so that she can go hang out in gym daycare, which I agree sucks comparatively. Afternoons her nap end time is somewhat erratic and 80 percent of the time I don't even get done the simple errand I had planned. So I have committed to an after work class 3x a week with my husband to spend quality time with the LOs then. I am trying that for a month and then seeing if I need to reasses

Also with separation anxiety- we had issues with that when we first started going when our oldest was 15 months. For a couple weeks I'd drop him off for 15 minutes most days just to get him used to it. I'd do a quick sprint, or drink a cup of coffee in silence. Having the gym close to home has been so nice for us!

@daniellemybelle: lol, with two, my motivation to do something every single day is gone! We do something (zoo, butterfly garden, aquarium) about once a week these days, it was every other day or so with 1, but I was also working less then. It was much easier with one, so even getting to the gym is a major victory lately! I was ready to go this morning, then a work crisis came up that forced me into a conference call, and we missed our late window to go. We'll get out later today once the little guy wakes up.

Me time is becoming more of a necessity again! I would love to go before my husband leaves for work, but he has to leave at the butt crack of dawn and childcare at the gym doesn't start till 8.

@daniellemybelle: ha you give me too much credit! It's mostly because I go stir crazy if we're home too much (small apartment!). And I don't think I could do a 6am work out either (actually I know I can't because I don't do it now, and that is a legitimate time I "could" work out, especially with a gym in our building...!). I think bringing LO to the gym is a great use of time--she gets some socialization/an activity, you get a workout and some you-time. And doing it in the morning (but not too crazy early!) will still make you feel accomplished!

ETA plus I also find that I am a better mom/have more fun out of the house when we're doing stuff, rather than racing and crashing cars for the 2nd hour in a row! :silly:

I'm a sahm for the summer, I work out 5-6x a week.
I alternate when I go, though. Monday's I go at 5pm because of a class I like. Tuesday I go at 4:30 for a cardio class, Wednesday I go at 9am and do my own weights routine. Thursday I go at 9am for yoga. Friday I go at 9am and lo has swimming lessons (at the gym) at 10.

I don't really have lo in activities other than swimming because we spend so much time going to parks with the weather as it is. If I were a SAHM during the school year, I would be more inclined to do classes then when the weather is cooler and we need a change of pace. Also, my LO LOVES the daycare at our gym and he asks to go nearly every day.

@hotchildinthecity: @plantains: Y'all, getting up earlier was not part of the plan! :silly:

@lemondrop: Well @hilsy85: makes an activity every day sound like a piece of cake. Blame her for my ambition. I have to set up a routine or LO will be watching The Wiggles for hours, seriously. Fighting my laziness is a daily battle! (Can you tell by the fact that I am HB when I should be working...?)

It varies for us, sometimes it is our only activity for them, nothing wrong with that, they love playing at the gym! Having an activity a day sounds overwhelming to me, some days I just want to take it easy! A lot of the time I'll run a few errands with them once we are done with the gym. The hardest part for me is getting out of the house since things always come up.

Sometimes we go mid-morning, and sometimes we go in the late afternoons, it just depends what we have going on that day.
