I had a better supply in the mornings so I tried to pump before it got too late. I never did it on any regular schedule, sometimes it was before LO ate sometimes after, just kinda was more based on how full my breasts felt.

My milk was good about 2 days in the fridge.

The advice I got was to pump an hour or so after DS eats. I found that I had much more milk in the morning, between 6am and 2pm, so I focused on pumping between those feedings. I would start with just picking one feeding and then pumping an hour after DS started nursing.

I pumped into bottles, then transferred to Lansinoh bags (they are the best!). If I was planning to freeze the milk, I put it in the freezer right away, or within 12 hours if I wasn't sure if I was going to freeze it. I copied a chart from Kellymom.com on breastmilk storage for you, so you know how long milk stays good in each place (from here - http://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/milkstorage/milkstorage/ )

Storage guidelines
HUMAN MILK STORAGE – QUICK REFERENCE CARD
Temperature Storage Time
Freshly expressed milk
Warm room 73-77°F / 23-25°C 4 hours
Room temperature 66-72°F / 19-22°C 6-10 hours
Insulated cooler / icepacks 59°F / 15°C 24 hours

Refrigerated Milk (Store at back, away from door)
Refrigerator (fresh milk) 32-39°F / 0-4°C 8 days (ideal: 72 hrs)
Refrigerator (thawed milk) 32-39°F / 0-4°C 24 hours

Frozen Milk (Do not refreeze! Store at back, away from door/sides)
Self-contained freezer unit
of a refrigerator/freezer
Varies: 0°F / -18°C 3-4 months
Separate deep freeze 0°F / -18°C 12 months (ideal: 6 months)

Because I went back to work full time, and DS was a good eater, I froze milk in larger quantities. The Lansinoh bags say they hold 6 oz, but I could fit 10 in easily if I laid them on their sides. You probably won't need to freeze that much in each bag, so I'd say you should freeze in whatever quantity DS typically eats. If he will usually eat 3oz per feeding, then I'd freeze 3oz per bag.

I pumped directly into the bottles and then stored the bottles in the fridge for 2 or 3 days. I would rotate the breastmilk, feeding him the older ones first so he never got anything older than maybe 2 days. I was feeding around 3 or 4 oz in the beginning so if I pumped exactly that amount, I would pour one bottle into the other bottle and put it in the fridge. Once I collected enough to freeze (more than a day's worth), I would pour the milk into the freezer bags, label them with the date, and then put it in the freezer. The longest I let the milk sit in the fridge before freezing was 2 days.

That was my process and it worked for me. I'm sure you'll find something that works for you too!

Do you pump on any sort of schedule?

DS is 10 days old now and breastfeeding has been surprisingly easy (lucky me, I know). Now that my initial engorgement has gone down I want to start pumping so DH can "help" feeding (his choice, not mine - not that I mind). But I never know when a good time to pump is, lol.

I have a rental pump from the hospital for the next couple weeks and I refuse to buy my own unless I actually do start pumping regularly and DH actually does feed the baby with a bottle on occasion.

So, when do you pump? Do you pump directly into storage baggies (the pump I currently have has two little bottles I'll have to pump into and then transfer the milk into the baggies)? How long do you/can you refrigerate the milk before it goes into the freezer? How much do you pump at once?

Any advice would be awesome!!! Thanks!
