He is a computer programmer so he can get a lot done at night at home building/maintaining websites. He does that for our temple and for the Jewish genealogy group in our area. He also goes on Sundays during LO's nap to an assisted living home to do genealogy with the residents. I was bummed, I used to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald house in a previous city we lived in and really enjoyed it. We volunteer ("guest chef") there regularly, and I know that they have volunteers who make blankets, clothing, etc. (sewing projects) on a regular basis for the residents.</p> <p>I'm only home with LO 2 days a week, but we volunteer at the animal shelter and local homeless shelter for women/children on those days on a regular basis. For the animal shelter we donate food and I make little kitten beds for the newborn kittens out of old shoeboxes lined with fleece, and make blankets for the cats and dogs. When LO gets older, obviously she will be able to help out more :)</p> <p>If you are looking for charities in a new area, I would start with your interests/causes, and go from there. We moved to a different state, so it's starting afresh with new organizations.</p> <p>So far I'm volunteering virtually doing some research for my former (nonprofit) employer and have done some sewing projects for local charities.... I want to find a commitment for at night after LO is asleep or on the weekends but haven't found the right fit yet! </p>
