DD used to love spinach leaves! now she's not really a big fan. If I make salads for dinner I'll offer her a couple leaves but give her more of the veggies that go in the salad. Cherry tomatoes are her favorite right now. She'll also eat sliced onion and olive. I buy the little frozen turkey meat balls from tj or the frozen grilled chicken strips to add if I feel like she didn't eat much. They're really easy to heat up so it's easy to add if needed.

@Mrs. Sunshine: I think it depends what veggies your LO likes and what they can chew properly. at that age mmy LO wasnt a big fan or typical salad veggies some were too crunchy or she didnt like the texture yet. Now she is nearly 4 and LOVES salad

I think raw shredded veggies would be great for a 12 month old. We're on vacation in Mexico with DD right now and discovered she loooooves the resort's ceviche, which has a lot of shredded carrots and onions. It's softened a little in the juices and whatnot, which i imagine your dressing would do. She has eight teeth, so pretty good ability to do a little chewing.

Also, lots of different salad possibilities, like chickpeas, feta, roasted zucchini, etc.

DD is a winter baby so we recently just started eating more salad, but I give it to her at home and when we're out. Usually she eats more of everything else and not much of the actual lettuce.

@ShootingStar: yeah. I guess I meant like raw shredded veggies, kinda siMilan to coleslaw i guess. I will definitely not be giving her actual lettuce leaves, I dont think that would go well lol

My 11.5mo LO happily eats random leaves off the ground outside, but will not eat lettuce or greens.

He makes an effort at eating raw veg, but with the exception of tomatoes, it doesn't really work well yet.

My DD is 2.5 and would not eat lettuce until recently (she watched The Land Before Time and then I told her lettuce was "tree stars like dinosaurs eat"- totally worked). She always has liked raw salad toppers like avocado, cucumber, zucchini. I didn't feel like it was necessary to make a separate veggie or cook what we were eating unless it is super crunchy like carrots.

Thanks yall! When DD1 was little I'd just serve her seperate veggies but dinner time is a crap show around here and I don't have the time/brain capacity for that at the end of the day! We did BLW and she has 6 teeth (all top) but I still wanted to see if other parents were giving their young LO's raw veggies. She does really well with a lot of foods, never had a choking or gagging issue so I'm sure as long as we avoid the leaves she will do fine. And just because it's relevant, my 2 year old calls lettuce/spinach leaves feathers 😂 it gets her to eat them everytime! lol

I think a more "chopped" style salad could be a hit. I do one with black beans, corn, avocado, red onion, pepper, sometimes tomato....you can put it over some kind of green (or not) for adults, or even mix it in with cold pasta. My kids also liked cucumber, chickpea, and roasted red pepper at a pretty young age, all of which work in salad.

My almost 3 year old strongly dislikes lettuce too! When I make salads for DH and I, I just out the cut up raw veggies on her plate with a spoonful of hummus to dip.

My LO is almost two and hasn't eaten lettuce yet--we have offered but he just doesn't eat it! But I imagine you will be adding a protein and others veggies to make your salad a meal so she could definitely eat those things. You could also do a pasta or grain salad and LO might enjoy the different pieces of that!

You could just make sure you have lots of veggies in the salad (like tomatoes, cucumbers etc.) that your 12 month old could eat! DS only recently started to like lettuce leaves (probably at close to 3 years old), but I'm sure it's different for everyone.

So now that the weather is warming up I really find myself wanting to make salads for dinner. Not as a side but as a main course. But I'm not really sure I could feed it to my 12 month old. Do you feed your one year old fresh salads? Do you just serve them the protien and give them a seperate veg? I feel like I'm making this complicated but I don't want to serve her a dinner that she cant eat!
