@mediagirl: I also work in media/communications. The issue with things like glassdoor is that there's usually a $200K difference in listings with the same title, so it's a little hard to get any idea based on that.

the same job in the same industry returned a result for over $200K. I know that's way more than they'd be offering here.

I typically give out 20-30k more than I'm at now and mention its negotiable for the right position. I have usually ended up being offered no less than 15k over what I make, which is what I would be satisfied with in the first place. It leaves room for negotiation. I do work for an organization currently that will not give someone more than 10k over what they currently make. I got around it because I could provide a history of consistent bonuses above my annual salary. Always aim high! If they're really interested in you, they will still talk to you even if the salary is more than they can offer because they'll at least want to see if you have any room to come down. At least that's been my experience.

@MaryM: I personally would not give out a number. I would say negotiable.

@Mrs D: I think I'll probably end up with something along the lines of "negotiable"

I'm sort of afraid to say anything else. I mean, they know I'm dedicated to the mission of the organization and have been working for too little money for a long time! I don't want them to assume I'll continue working for too little money... but I also don't want to completely shoot myself in the foot. I'm perfectly qualified, but lacking a tiny bit in one area of the job description (only because I've worked for the organization for so long that I didn't have the opportunity to do that job...because it's very specific to one person...you get fired if you attempt to do it when it's not your job)

@MaryM: Can you just say "negotiable"...? I am a firm believer that he who throws the first number loses...

however, since it is within your current company they know your current number.

You could also say...Salary Expectations: "Consistent with experience and performance" still leaves room for them to offer and/or you to negotiate?

@MaryM: if it's a promotion, I would guess you would base it on what you make now, no? Do some research to find out what that job makes in the area (glassdoor is good) and then bump it some because they know you. You're staying within the same company and they know you are a reliable employee.

@mediagirl: it would be a promotion, so I don't want to base it at all on what I make now (plus I've been in the same position for 7 years and haven't gotten a raise, so I know what I make now isn't exactly competitive).

It's an internal position so I know they have access to what I currently make.

This depends, already having a salary, I would use that to add or decrease based on the position applying for.

Also if you think there is room in their budget shoot high. If they like you they will be willing to negotiate. Last year I was aiming for a 5K raise, I asked for 10K instead (assuming they would counter), and I ended up with the full 10K :).

What do you do when applying for a job, and they request resume, cover letter, and salary expectations?

I feel like a lot of people (including management professors) have suggested not giving a salary expectation, but how do you get around it without having your resume set aside?
