@gotkimchi: Hi there! I worked closely with my friend who is actually an amazing consultant. I'd love to put you in touch with her directly as she's the expert here - not me :-) Feel free to post to my wall with your contact info and I can hook you two up!

Do you have any suggestions for wording or could you paste the email here? (Not with personal info of course) I'm just looking for suggestions on how to go about this as its one of the things I struggle with!

@Ms.Badger: absolutely. My friend has helped 5 other women negotiate for our professional salaries. She said the only thing that we ALL were worried about was seeming too "pushy" and in the end, none of that ever was actually how they ended up being perceived.

I'm looking to go from a job where I think I have been slightly underpaid - even though I get great raises each year, I still feel like I'm trying to play catch-up! So now's the time to catch-up I suppose!

I just want to say Good Luck and awesome job advocating for yourself. When i got my job 2.5 years ago right out of grad school the amount i asked for seemed like an insane amount to me.... but at every annual review they tell me how underpaid I am (i got a 12%, followed by a 20% raise) so I REALLY should have asked for more upfront. I am convinced women ask for less money than men and it's a big part of the reason women still make $0.78 for every dollar a man makes.

@math.nerd: I've countered for my current job. I admit my boss helped me with the wording and luckily, I got what I asked for. For the future, I'm worried about this, too. I'll reach out to my former boss again on what to say if I get to the negotiation point. Good luck!

I'm in the middle of some new job salary negotiations and I just sent my "counter" to my potential new employer.

I've been working with a good friend who helped me construct my email. A few days ago, I would have thought that the original offer was amazing - but after some research and review I felt like it was OK to ask for more (and expect something in the middle). I just can't believe that these are the numbers I'm actually talking about.

I'm mostly just posting this now to pass the time while I wait to hear about a response. I'm totally freaked out. Any negotiation stories would be appreciated!
