i used to feel the same way because i didn't know what "salt to taste" meant, and i much preferred recipes that had a specific quantity of salt. but now, after years and years of cooking, i'm more comfortable with the amount of salt a dish needs and i don't measure the amount of salt that i throw in.

I don't use a lot if salt in cooking, so I taste before I serve,

The point isn't to make the dish salty tasting, but to bring out the flavor of the food ( which is partly why you use salt in some sweet baked goods).

I love that you're so into cooking and food, mr. Bee.

Adds as much or as little as the cook likes. Salt it, taste it. If it needs more add more. But, if you are known for liking salry food, don't keep adding. People can salt their own food after it's served but they cannot undo an aggressively salty dish.

I think it means add as much salt as you like. I'm not a huge salt fan so I don't add much. My DH typically adds more before eating.

It depends on the end quantity of food. And I am a bad, horrible rule breaker when cooking for my family and totally taste stuff while cooking. I typically start with about 1/4 tsp and move up from there until it tastes good. It basically just means add salt until you like how it tastes. :)

I have to admit that I have nooo idea what to do when a recipe says, "add salt to taste." What does that even mean!! How can you know how a meal will taste until it's done??

I always add a minimum amount of salt, and then taste the food when it's done cooking... and then add more salt if needed. It's always easy to add more salt... hard to remove it though!

How much salt do you add when it says, "salt to taste"?
