I loved French food at Cafe Claude, Italian food at Brindisi Cucina, shopping at Embarcadero ( a block from the Ferry building but it was closed when I got there), and an awesome double decker tour of everything from a super clear blue day at Golden Gate Bridge to the hustle bustle of Union Square. Went to Little Italy, Oakland on the Bart and the edge of Chinatown. Everyone I met, except a grouch in the elevator, was super friendly and welcoming. I had a lot of fun exploring. Tip: Aveda has a beauty school in the city and the facial there was absolutely top-notch professional...at a third of the price! Next time, I'll get my haircut and full treatment there. I saw two friends and a relative, in addition to working in SF and Skyping with LO back home. What a great trip! Thanks again for all the great ideas! :D

We went about 3 years ago. We went to this place called Maru Sushi off of Union Square. I still dream about the sushi! I darn near booked a flight while I was pregnant I was craving it so bad! hahah. We rented bikes and went across to Saulsito (sp?) (DH actually proposed on the bridge going over :) ) It was a cute town that we walked around for a bit.
So much to see and do!

@808love: I'm obsessed with SPG points. When I don't have any to use, I'm always trying to build them up. And as for work trips, I basically never have time to do anything unless I build in an extra day that I pay for myself. Have fun, lady!!!

@MrsMcD: I love Westin but I ran out of SPG points. I already have another hotel covered by work though. I'll check out the Cafe ....it sounds scrumptious. And the bike ride sounds divine but doubt I'll fit it in, but then again...it may be a priority, depending on my mood!

@PurplePeony: I'm love little shops like that! I think my friend I'm meeting up this weekend will love the tavern for dessert. @Raindrop: tea and PPQ sounds great -we just ate at a crab place like that over here recently so I might have to skip it based on my limited time.

@illumina: any specific place in Little Italy?

Wow, Bees! I'm so excited thanks to all of your superb pointers!

@808love: I love San Francisco! The Westin St. Francis is perfect and business' sometimes okay Westins for business trips.

A baseball game at Giants' stadium is such an amazing experience, even if you aren't the biggest fan.

And I love Cafe De La Presse in Chinatown. Not a touristy spot.

I also think that riding a bike across the golden gate bridge to sausalito was an amazing experience if you can find the time. Just don't wear leather soled sandals!

Get out of the typical tourist trap areas - fishermans wharf/north beach/union square - and go walk around these for a real taste of SF

Mission
Noe Valley
Hayes Valley
Fillmore Street
Lower Haight

You can't go wrong with any food/shopping there. Yelp is pretty helpful if you just search what's near you.

@808love: both restaurants are in the Financial District/bordering on Chinatown area. I'm sure there are more exciting restaurants in SF but they were close to my hotel and had space available at the bar so I could eat, haha. Another fun area for shopping is Pacific Heights/Western Addition. I was pregnant while I was there and there are a couple of awesome maternity boutiques I had to check out, but lots of other cute, locally-owned stores around those areas!

We liked Lombard St, the trolley museum, riding the trolleys and walking along the beach to the Golden Gate bridge. We ate most of our meals in Little Italy, which had the most amazing restaurants. I wasn't that fussed on Fisherman's Wharf, though it is worth a look, if only for the sealions ;)

I've heard Sausalito (sp?) and Muir woods are both nice. We skipped those as we were short on time and decided to do a mammoth day trip out to Yosemite instead.

@Alivoo01: I'm not really into Pho and I have a place provided for me downtown. Thanks for your response though. I love those double decker buses too. You learn so much!
@Mrs.Someone: Haha, yes, I saw all of that on my first trip long ago! Great recommendations. There's always the wharf for some good clam chowder.
@Sunny: @snowjewelz: Ferry Building it is!
@PurplePeony: I packed some sneakers along with my boots for comfort. It's been fun pre-shopping some professional clothes for the trip. I'll check out your recommendations. I've never heard of some of those places. Thanks for the effort to retype! Hope it's not too cold.

On a sad note, I had a long drawn out goodbye with LO today. I will miss her so much but I keep telling myself, she won't grow much in 5 days!

@snowjewelz: People raved about R&G Lounge and their salt and pepper crab. We ordered it, but wasn't impressed. Will have to keep PPQ in mind for the future!! Thanks for sharing!!

If you haven't been to SF, definitely do the touristy stuff: Ghiradelli Square, Fisherman's Wharf, etc. Lombardi street is interesting to see, and the Trollies are fun.

@Alivoo01: Speaking of Vietnamese, I really loved Vietnamese food in SF, esp w/ the giant crabs! In NY Viet food usaully just equal pho.

I second Ferry Building for many choices! If you have time I'd totally drive over the Golden Gate and hang out in Sausalito too and go to Muir Woods for a nice walk!

We stayed at Hotel Nikko via Priceline's Name your Own price. We got a great deal for being downtown and the room was actually really spacious, including the bathroom! It was close to all the major attractions and we just walked everywhere.

If you want to see the city, take the big bus tour. you can get on and off anywhere or buy the trolley/muni ticket for a couple days. Much cheaper than buying daily passes!

If you love pho, you HAVE to stop by Turtle Tower and have their pho ga. I'm normally a beef noodle soup lover, but omg. their chicken pho was aaaaamazing!! It's near Larkin and Eddy. It is in the Tenderloin, but it wasn't bad of a trek.

Aagghh, I just typed a long reply and the internet ate it!!! Shortened version:

When I was there for work a few months ago, I stayed at the Club Quarters and thought the location was really good, near lots of stuff. Two places I ended up eating at and liking were Wayfare Tavern and Cafe Zoetrope -- there were other places I wanted to try but I didn't know my schedule in advance enough to make reservations and it was right before the America's Cup so things were pretty busy, you may have an easier time getting into places this time of year. The Japanese mall is fun to wander through, as is Chinatown. There were lots of cool stores in Cow Hollow, I wish I'd had more time to browse in them. If you're in reasonable shape, walking is an awesome way to see the city but bring comfortable shoes because those hills are no joke!
