@yoursilverlining: I have a slight obsession with Jelly Bellys! 😀 here's the info on the tours: http://www.jellybelly.com/california-factory-tours

It is about an hour outside the city but you said you'd have a car and I thought the tour was fun!

We took DS to SF when he was like 6 months old so I can't make any recommendations on what to do, but we did eat a ton!! Just be mindful waiting at any place could be a good hour or so since seating is so limited due to their small available space! The Ferry building has tons of good restaurants to check out. We stayed in the Financial district and walked everywhere. The 1st 2 days was a bit worrisome, but once we figured out all the roads and paths to take, we didn't mind going through the tenderloin. Some of the best restaurants were in the heart of the tenderloin. Just don't go in the evening where the sketchiness is definitely higher!

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts--Children's Creativity Museum, carousel, playground, theatre, movie theatre. Wonderful place to spend time with young kids.

Golden Gate Park-- Koret Children's Quarter, Academy of Sciences (beautiful museum environments with mediocre exhibits) Japanese Tea Garden, Stow Lake (paddle boats). Most of the attractions are on the east side of the park... Unless you want to venture out to the beach. You can find lots of great places to eat right outside the park in the Inner Sunset. I recommend Marnee Thai, Arizmendi, and Park Chow.

Exploratorium

Cable Cars

Walk around Chinatown. There are lots of places to taste tea there.

Check out City Lights bookstore and all the cute Italian cafes and gelato places in North Beach. Sometimes you can spot wild parrots at Washington Square Park.

Have a great time! San Francisco is wonderful!

@tofuwad: Thanks for the tip on the tea house in Golden Gate Park. I saw it online, but couldn't tell how nice/good it would be. Maybe we'll hit that too.

My hubby and I went here for our honeymoon and loved it! I would go down to the piers and farmers market early on so you can get food and enjoy the tasty cheese. I don't remember what days it is open.

Tenderloin is known for being a sketchy area. We stayed in Nob Hill in an apartment, just past the Tenderloin area.

We didn't have a car when we were there and purchased a Muni 7 day unlimited pass which they sell at convenience stores. The public transportation was great and we were able to use it to get everywhere once we figured it out. It was a really good deal and we got to ride cable cars with it whenever we wanted to, which is something fun/ touristy, but without the pass is kind of pricey per trip. You can get 3 day passes too. https://www.sfmta.com/getting-around/transit/fares-passes/visitor-day-passes We never used BART except to get us from the airport to our apartment area.

We did the California Academy of Sciences and liked it!

We also visited the Boudin's bakery in Fisherman's wharf where all the piers are and the farmer's market. One of the piers is where the sea lions hang out so that is interesting to see. It is a touristy area, but I think it is worth visiting. The bread at Boudin's is delicious and they make it into animal shapes which is kind of cool, you can watch them doing it from a window outside and one of the cooks wears a microphone and talk to the people outside on the street watching.

We also did Alcatraz, but it takes a while and wouldn't be terribly exciting for a little kid.

As for eating, we just strolled the streets until we found interesting looking places and used yelp if we wanted to look up reviews.

We went to a tasty ice cream place that has a line up, but is so delicious: Bi Rite Creamery.

We also went on a free walking tour across the Golden Gate Bridge, which was pretty good and walking the bridge was pretty cool. http://www.sfcityguides.org/current_schedule.html

Have fun!

If you're already going to the Cal Academy I'd go to the Japanese tea house in Golden Gate Park. I haven't been there with LO but I have been before and it's very pretty. Honestly, there's so much to do in Golden Gate Park you could just spend several days running around in there! :)

The SF zoo and the Exploratorium are super fun.

And if you're up for a drive there's an amazing children's bookstore in Los Altos (a smallish town about an hour south of SF) called Linden Tree Books. Not that there aren't great bookstores in SF, I just love Linden Tree. One of the best used bookstores in SF is Green Apple books (although it's huge and kind of a maze so not super stroller friendly).

And one thing we always did when I was a kid was go to Ghiradelli square and buy chocolate themed things. That's in the touristy Fisherman's Wharf area.

Have a great trip!

I loved touring Alcatraz but I don't know how well that would work with a LO. Going down to the pier will be fun for a kid. And I went outside the city for an afternoon and toured the Jelly Belly jelly bean factory and that was a lot of fun. Your LO might enjoy that!

I felt uncomfortable walking in Tenderloin at night even with my husband. There are some routes which are ok -- check with your hotel concierge.

I really enjoyed the Ferry Building which was a recommendation from HB. We walked there from our hotel near Tenderloin.

Parking is really pricey everywhere and we didn't have a car/parking when we were there, so I took the BART and Muni everywhere with LO in a stroller. Be aware that there is typically only 1 elevator into the BART and the Muni has some steps depending on where you get off (it goes both above and below ground -- I think the below ground stops were level, but the above ground stops had 3 steps down to the street).

No kids when we went, but out of the things I've done there on my two trips there, I think LO would like to watch the seals at pier 39. I also thought Ghiradelli would be a total stupid tourist trap, but they had pretty good icecream sundaes :silly:

I love SF, but have never gone there with a LO. I do think a picnic lunch at Alamo Square (in front of the Full House house) would be fun with a kid. But a random tip of personal advice: don't walk in the Tenderloin district at night by yourself. Also, uber is fantastic in SF.

Would love your SF recommendations!!!

We are going to be traveling to San Francisco for my husband’s work, which means that LO and I will have about 4 days on our own to explore the city. We are staying in the Nob Hill/Tenderloin districts, and will have a car. We are good walkers, and I’m also comfortable taking public transportation, or driving. So, lots of options!

I was thinking about doing the California Academy of Sciences aquarium and indoor rain forest one day (….unless people say it’s not really very good..?)

Other things LO and I like to do together:
• Live: music, dance, theater, etc. (no sports)
• Stuff with animals
• Fairs and festivals
• Books + bookstores
• Tea (LO and I have gone to a few tea houses, and she *loves* tea so a tea house recommendation would be wonderful!)

What would you recommend we do? I’m open to the usual tourist stuff too, because I’ve actually never been to SF before.

Please recommend your favorite restaurants, coffee/tea and anything!

THANKS!
