@mrbee: LOL I don't agree but this was DH's argument last night.

Chocolate = chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, and cocoa solids

White Chocolate = only cocoa butter

Most people will say if a chocolate doesn't contain cocoa solids it's not chocolate because that's what gives chocolate it's range of dark to milk ratio. White chocolate doesn't have a similar range because of the absence of cocoa solids.

When DH told me this I covered my ears and went "LALALALA" :silly:

@skipra: Interesting point. Do sandwiches need to be savory?

If we go down the road of pies being sandwiches.... than pop tarts should be consider sandwiches. Oreo cookies?

Based on some of these being considered sandwiches, could you also consider pie a sandwich? Filling in between two layers of "bread"? Or does it specifically have to be yeast bread? Some of these seem crazy to me. Pizza is pizza, not a sandwich!

@stiletto_mom: I thought hot dog would be an obvious sandwich! But I guess I'm wrong. :) ESPN thinks it's a sandwich http://espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=hruby/040211 BUT the national hot dog and sausage council does not! http://www.hot-dog.org/culture/hot-dog-sandwich

It's a tricky one. :)

@pregnantbee: DH refuses to admit an open face sandwich is a sandwich and I told him it had the word sandwich in it... and he argued with me that white chocolate has the word chocolate and it's not chocolate... I was like what?!?! That was a whole another argument there! Haha.

I always assumed a sandwich was two pieces of bread/buns with ingredients other than ground beef in the middle.

So a burger is a kind or sandwich. So is a sub.

And open face sandwich is not because it doesn't sandwich anything. A hot dog could be abother type of sandwich.

I am thinking about what I can get at the Sandwich line at the cafeteria, I can get a wrap, a panini, a sub, etc. I would have to go to the Grill to get a burger or hot dog, the other stuff is usually served at a specialty station. There's no pizza station at one location, but at the other you can get a calzone, slice or flatbread, lol.

@Mamaof2: Well, a sub is a sandwich. The word "Sub" is short for "submarine sandwich".

I do not classify a hamburger as a sandwich but I guess technically it is. If it's made with a bun, it's still a sandwich in my mind. I actually prefer my sandwiches made on buns.

I would consider an open faced sandwich still a sandwich because I think you usually get two slices of bread, it's just not eaten together.

I do not consider a wrap a sandwich, or anything else on the list.

A sandwich is 2 pieces of bread with something inside. That's it!

A sandwich isn't a sub, hoagie, taco, gyro, etc.

eta: a hamburger is on a BUN not bread, so again, not a sandwich!

@sera_87: a calzone is not pizza although the ingredients are similar. A calzone is more similar to a turn over or empanada. In NY we get a side of sauce (tomato) and dip as we eat.

And yes, NYers do fold their pizza in half (well at least I do). I fold my slice for the first half and then open it back up for the finish. Perhaps because slices are pretty large and the crust is flexible? Lol I never even though this was a "thing"!

In my head, most of the things you listed are NOT sandwiches. For me it's all about the type of bread.... That is what constitutes a sandwich for me!

@Raindrop: That is crazy talk!!

I like the approach in the NYT Field Guide to the American Sandwich, which breaks down a taxonomy of sandwich-dom:

<< There are five main families of sandwich in The New York Times Field Guide.

There are sandwiches made on Kaiser or "hard" rolls.
There are sandwiches made on soft buns.
There are sandwiches made on long hero or sub rolls.
There are sandwiches made on sliced bread.
And there are what we call "singulars," which are those creations on bread that falls outside these other groups but are still vital to the sandwich landscape, like the muffuletta. >>

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/04/14/dining/field-guide-to-the-sandwich.html

What about a "low carb / bunless lettuce wrapped sandwich", which is basically a piece of meat with a bunch of lettuce on the side (or on top and bottom of the piece of meat) lol

But true this makes me think. I always think anything that is "sandwiched" between two pieces of bread is considered a sandwich. I never considered a burger a sandwich (because it is a bun) until recently (literally last weekend) when the menu said sandwich, you'd expect it to come with square sandwich breads right, it came out to be a burger. There I was wondering, wait am I crazy? Maybe burger IS a sandwich?
