My mother had 6 children. We did annual purges of uninteresting/broken toys, but otherwise, we kept everything. My youngest sibling is in high school, but she still has two closets full of toys in the basement that are different and unique for the grandkids to enjoy at grandma's house.

I keep all toys except ones I hate. I'm not done having kids yet, but when we start to outgrow toys, I'll keep the unique and good quality toys for the grandkids to eventually play with.

We saved everything for our 2nd son and I'm glad we did. We had the room. However, I found that after the baby stage, DS2 just wanted to play with whatever DS1 was into at the time so there was a lot of toys that went unplayed with. But you never know what your kids will be into so I was fine with doing the purge later. TBH, it's still going on!

We are still undecided on a second but considering DD is 3.5 we are looking at a large age gap. We have kept about 50% of the baby/early toddler toys. Though we have never had a ton of toys. It was pretty easy to weed out the broken things, the ones that annoyed the crap out of us, and ones that were just too large to store easily.

Most of the toys past baby/early toddler are ones that DD still plays with, and likely will for the future.

Also consignment stores always tend to have lots of baby toys in good shape. We can always buy a few more used toys if we really need them.

I saved everything; but the great thing is I have a friend to hand down to and then the toys come back to me so I don't have everything at the same time.

However as the girls get older and grow out of baby toys, we haven't really had much to hand down.

@looch: we have a train table and it flips to a Lego table, so I'm sure it will be around for a while.

I just have like 6 overflowing canvas cubes of toys in our basement. I feel like I should thin the herd, but like 80% of it is Legos, trains, blocks, and Melissa & Doug cars, trucks, construction vehicles. He's not even 2 1/2 yet so there is a lot of use down the road... But I'm sooo worried he has too much and won't appreciate things. I know, it's ridiculous 🙈

@Sams Mom: Save it. My son still plays with his Duplo trains and mixes his Duplos up with his more sophisticated lego sets.

If you have a train table, save that too. It makes a great Lego city.

I will say that when I put that I “saved everything” we have never had a ton of toys compared to some of my friends’ kids. So if you have a LOT of toys maybe consider paring down or at least doing a toy rotation.

I'm having a hard time getting rid of stuff because everything he has is pretty nice stuff. Here's an only grandchild so lots of focus and attention and gifts just because 🙄.

I guess I'll box up any baby stuff from the bottom of the boxes and pitch anything that's not worth saving. A lot of his toys he can play with for a long time i.e. building blocks, duplo, chunky Legos, trains and cars... So I'll just have to find a better storage solutions.

I pared our stash down, getting rid of cheap or bulky stuff my son didn't really like. I can't stand clutter and learned early on that toys are fun for the kids for like a week then they're not interested (just like adults!) I probably got rid of had the toys- I gave them away on FB mom swap page. Ds#2 will have much fewer toys but a big brother so I'm not too worried about it 🤣

Also, as my kid outgrew baby toys/toddler toys I'd get rid of everything I hated (noisy, plasticy, big, charter themed) and pared it down to toys he actually played with that were quality. I have to say it was much easier to get rid of toys when he was 2.5/3 than it is now at 4.5. Now he notices much more and remembers toys, but not whether he actually liked them.

I hate stuff and clutter so I saved a basket of baby toys I liked and figured baby would want to play with his brothers toys and would grow into them soon enough. A lot of the toys that we had around for Mr 3 year old we're actually fine for baby too (douplos, building blocks, train tracks, kitchen stuff).

Ours were 3 years apart and we definitely saved everything. Besides the big baby toys (jumparoo, play mat) everything else we had that was 100% baby fit in a fairly small storage container. All our other toys have grown with my older daughter and so most she still plays with and never got put away. I'll probably still save the real baby age toys anyway even though it's doubtful we have a 3rd just for my little brother or any babies around in the future.
