My mom gets savings bonds for my daughter for major events. My grandmother did the same for me when I was little, and it was nice to get them when I graduated since she had died several years prior to that. I didn't even know I had them since my parents just kept them locked up until they matured. It was sweet to get a gift from my grandma after she was gone.

Cash is king for a reason, it's the best option IMO. I prefer to receive it over bonds, that's for sure, especially American ones.

We've gotten a couple of savings bonds. I also think you should ask what would be best though because you don't know what they've already started for their LO.

@MamaMoose: Oh, good point on interest rates. And speaking of which, I need my husband to hunt down his and cash them in already... :) Finding out if they have a 529 set up is a great idea. I'll get my husband to ask. Thanks!

@mediagirl: I would probably ask the parents if they have already established a 529 or similar savings account that you can make a contribution too. Savings Bonds used to be a great gift. My husband received a bunch throughout his childhood and they actually made up the majority of our downpayment on our house! But these days interest rates as SO LOW that savings bonds aren't really a great option to get a good return.

LO's grandparents set up a savings for her. By the time she's 18, it should cover her college education!

Yes, someone gave us a savings bond for the LO. I haven't done anything with it yet, though! It is just sitting in a drawer.

We have a very generous friend who had a baby in June. They are having her Baptism in March and we would like to do something nice for her. My husband is her godfather. We were considering setting up a kids investment account or giving savings bonds.

What would you suggest if you wanted to give money to the child for their baptism (and subsequent holidays and events) but don't want to give them cash? Has anyone done this for your LO or have you done this for anyone?
