My girlfriend had the hoax call about her in jail happen to her grandparents and they sent the money and never saw it again. Lastly when I was little there was this company that offerred to get you into college guarenteed and for some reason I heard about it and BEGGED my parents to buy into it..they did and found out quickly like within a day that it was a scam and somehow got all their money back.

I haven't. But DHs grandma got a call from someone saying "Grandma? It's me.. I'm in jail" and she said "L___?" and scammer said "yes!.. i need $3,000 to get out. Please don't tell mom and dad.. etc"

So then GIL called our house and asked he DH was home. I said yep he's sleeping as he just got off night shift. She said "are you sure he's not in Quebec!?" I said.. pretty sure he is right here! So then she told me what happened. It's a good thing he was home, because if I had said "no, he's not here" she wasn't going to tell me about the call and she was going to wire the money!

I feel so bad for her, because it really spooked her. She kept referring to the person on the phone as my DH too. Saying things like "L___ sounded so different!" and my DH was like "because it wasn't actually me!!"

She didn't stop talking about it for WEEKS and finally FIL had to say "this won't happen again, if it does ever happen, you call US they are OUR kids and you better not consider bailing them out of jail without us knowing... and our kids are not the type to be arrested.. slash they are too old for that sort of shenanigan!" ... she literally did not stop talking about it for weeks and finally piped down after FIL sternly told her she needed to.

Makes me sick when people try to scam the elderly!

@sorrycharlie: my grandparents had that happen too...except they said they were in jail so not to call his parents. My grandma actually went to the western union to wire the money, and the lady there said she should check into it bc 3 other people from the same building had been in to wire money that morning. Now we have a safe word if something were really to happen.

I've had my debit card scammed - and I was not treated nicely by the bank. They basically said if it wasn't me, it was me and my family conspiring with the scammer to steal money. They deposited fake cheques and the bank wanted $900 repaid. They had collections calling me. It was really awful - I was in university at the time and had very little money. At the advice of a police officer friend, we ignored collections and eventually the bank dropped it. We don't deal with that bank anymore, and our family had been long time users of their services. Not fun.

No scams, but our cc numbers get jacked occasionally. I figure from online somewhere, but who knows. The last time they charged up a huge bill on DH's card for an escort service in Germany, lol!

I've never been scammed but I got a phone call a few weeks ago saying that they were my debit card provider and my debit card had been suspended and I needed to verify my banking information. I hung up right away, and low and behold my debit card was working just fine.

My neighbor almost fell for one of those craigslist scams where someone pays you more than you asked for and asks you to cut them a check for part of the overage but then their payment never clears. DH had to tell him it was a scam and not to do it.

@ms.janedoe: When you buy property, your name and address are public record in the deeds office as well as through your mortgage. We still get tons of those and we've lived in our place for almost 4 years. The way that I know that they're soliciting is that they use my maiden name. I signed our mortgage and deeds with my maiden name and changed it after we closed on our place.

it's so scary!! my grandparents *almost* got scammed a couple years ago. someone called them saying he was my brother (used his name, even) and said he was a victim of a carjacking (or something to that nature, I forget!! accident maybe) and needed money and help immediately. the reason my grandparents were tipped off was that my brother was HOME when they got the call, so they knew it was not real. he luckily lives a block away, so my grandfather had just spoken with him!

Not a huge "scam," but since we recently built/bought/closed on a house, we've been getting a lot of letters in the mail (that look exactly like bills) telling us if we "want to obtain a physical copy of the deed" or something (I don't remember exactly what it is), we just have to mail a payment of anywhere from $59.99-$299.99 and they'll send it to us. At the verrrrrry bottom in teeeeeny-tiny print, it says that it is NOT a bill and no action is required, that it's an optional thing, but I can't help but wonder how many people have actually "fallen" for it. Like I said, it looks pretty legit!

ETA:  WHAT?!?!?! Look at this!!
ETA Round 2: OK, my actual edit (before I found the smiley faces!) was going to be that we did not actually send money to anyone.

Yes I got scammed once in college. There was a job posting in a newspaper and I called the phone #. It was a voice recording that was explaining (in a lot of detail) the steps to applying for the job. And it kept repeating itself and then asking me to hold. I finally hung up after about 10 minutes. I was naive so I just kept listening to that recording. UGH. That month, I got my phone bill and it was $100 more than my typical bill because that phone call was charging me $10/a minute!

I just received a warning about the Jury Duty scan in an email. Basically, if you ever skipped jury duty someone will ask you for personal info to insure a warrant for your arrest is not issued. The scammers are trying to steal identities.

Several years ago a car enthusiast friend was victim to a scam. He lost $10, 000 wiring money to a car owner. He never even saw the hot rod in person.

Have you ever been scammed?
