When I split my chin open in college, a friend recommended vitamin e capsules - the kind you'd take orally as vitamins. You just pop them with a pin or the tip of a sharp knife and squeeze out the gel - apply it directly to the scar. Neither of us were left with scars (no discoloration or raised skin at all) on our faces!

Eta: Oops, didn't see @blackbird: already explained the capsule technique

Since it's her face I would probably consult a pediatric plastic surgeon and go with whatever they say.

My mom swears by ScarAway silicone sheets. Not sure how old your LO is and if they could resist removing it. The information says not for under 3 because it could be a choking hazard.

My Ped told me to crush vitamin E pill and breast milk when DD got a second degree burn on her face. Also, keep protected from sun exposure. This happened in February and it's pretty much unnoticeable now.

@regberadaisy: I completely understand! It is confusing and I honestly don't even know how to tell with my own cut whether anything I did helped or whether it would have just healed the same regardless, haha. I did massage it (once it was mostly healed), and I feel like that was helpful. I used vaseline to reduce the friction. (ETA: and by mostly healed, I mean there wasn't a scab anymore but there was still a mark, if that makes sense! I'd basically put a little vaseline on my finger and rub the scar).

@MrsSCB: haha thanks for the link! There are so many opinions and everyone has had great experience with what they tell me. Which makes me want to try them all! I don't want my daughter to have a scar on her face for life! (Being dramatic  )

Keeping it out of the sun is definitely key! I got a cut on my face recently, and that was the number one thing my derm recommended. He just said to keep it moist with just vaseline and keep it covered, especially in the sun. I asked about over the counter stuff (vitamin e, mederma, etc) and he actually didn't recommend anything over plain vaseline. I found this article that basically shares his same viewpoint. There are definitely a lot of differing opinions, though. http://www.everydayhealth.com/skin-and-beauty/dos-and-donts-of-scar-prevention.aspx

@Ginabean3: yes! Two doctors have told us keeping it protected from the sun is the biggest factor. They suggested putting a band aid over it when we are outside.

The mederma takes forever to dry! Did you wait for it to dry then put sunscreen on top?

DD fell into the corner of an open dresser drawer and split her forehead open. We got it glued and after the glue came off on its own we started putting Kele-Cote on it. Works great! Pricey but worth it. When we go outside we also layer on Mederma+sunscreen!

I think keeping the scar protected from the sun is a big deal and will help it fade.

About 2 weeks ago, DD1 fell off the couch and hit her cheeks on the coffee table. She got 5 stitches right under her eye. Stitches are out, everything is closed and we're ready for scar prevention measures.

I've heard vitamin E, cocoa butter and mederma for kids. I've been using mederma today and I almost want to alternate daily between the other two. I mean a lot of people use cocoa butter as a lotion and vitamin e is basically an essential oil, right?

Any other tried and true scar prevention methods?
