I don't know if this will help, but here's some of the things we're doing (E isn't potty-trained, although he's in underwear a lot during the day now, so take it with a grain of salt).

Elmo's Potty Time video. He LOVES Elmo!

Thomas the Train Big Boy Underwear. He also LOVES Thomas right, so he's really excited to wear them. We make a big deal about how they are big boy underwear and he's a big boy now and big boys don't wear diapers, they wear cool Thomas underwear. We told him if he doesn't at least try to pee and poop on the potty that he'll have to stay in diapers and not wear big boy underwear.

We made up a really silly potty song (seriously silly: Sitting on the potty, peeing in the potty, pooping in the potty LIKE A BIG BOY!) We sit with him and sing it enthusiastically whenever he's sitting on it.

Small toys (in our case small wooden train cars) or a favorite book while he's sitting. They distract him enough to relax.

When he does go we make a huge deal out of it. Singing, cheering, dancing, giving him a bowl of raspberries (his favorite), and letting him flush (he only gets to do that if he's peed or pooped).

My MIL swears by putting cheerios in the toilet and using them as target practice, but we haven't tried that yet.

We're kind of taking the slow path, I think, but over the course of a few weekends he's starting to wear the underwear almost all day and telling us when he needs to go (and I ask him like every 5 minutes, lol!)

We give them incentive. We don't let them eat candy or ice cream so we do the star system. If they get 10 stars, they can get a lollipop or book or toy or ice cream....they mostly choose lollipop, unfortunately. One for pee, two for poop. If they pee and poop, we just give them two, one for going on the potty, another one for poop.

DS will be 3 in March and I really want to get moving on the whole potty training thing. He is so busy and can get so focused on what he's playing with that I know that will be a challenge. We attempted potty training over Christmas break but we just did not set ourselves up well and gave up quickly. Also on day 2 he was scared of sitting on the potty. Now, he will sometimes say if he is trying to poop and I will try to get him on the potty but he freaks out saying he's scared and doesn't want to. He has pooped on the potty twice (most recently he was holding it and seemed constipated) but has never peed on the potty.

How do we overcome the fear and get him excited about potty training?
