Can you assocaite a cup with being a "BIG GIRL" and make a big deal about her being a big girl who doesn't need a bottle? Also, start with a soft topped sippy so it's not such a huge adjustment?

My DD sort of bottle weaned herself after I stopped nursing at bedtime. I offered a straw cup and then the bottle and she realized pretty quick that she could get way more from the cup, so she started refusing the bottle... Lots of cuddling and having her sit in my lap while she drank from the cup were key to the transition. FWIW, we use a Lansinoh Momma straw cup or a Take and Toss straw cup.

I think it just has to be the right cup. Our ounces definitely went down when bottle weaning which bothers me, but some cups are much slower than others. The Take and Toss seem to be the right speed for us. I completely quit all bottles at 12ish months.

I totally understand the feeling of wanting to get rid of bottles before #2. DD#2 is due in June and DD#1 was 19 months when we switched. It was surprisingly easy but I think it had to do with the sippy. She rejected milk in sippys until I tried the take and toss sippys. She has a sippy before nap time and bed time, we just brush her teeth before she actually sleeps. I think she took to it better because she could lay down and drink it just like a bottle. Goodluck!

@PinkElephant: We had day cups done by 12.5 months, and only just in the last week at 14 months has she been exclusively cups now. Finally put away all the bottles!! (Until August... haha)

But like you, I wanted to make sure bottles were gone before baby came along so she didn't think the baby was taking *her* bottles.

@swurlygurl: Thanks! Can I ask how old your daughter was when you went through this?

Sorry if I wasn't clear - our daytime cup situation was sorted around the time she was a year old (so nearly 8 months ago) - it just didn't end the way I wanted it to, hence my reluctance.

Sounds like from your experience to get the result I want I need to be prepared for a long process....and need to start ASAP!

I moved on to the bed time cup after we had the daytime cup situation figured out. I just started trying to give her the cup first. We'd fight for 10 minutes and then I'd give in and give her a bottle. After a couple weeks she would take the cup for a couple sips, then demand the bottle again. Finally another couple weeks and she would just finish from the cup. It was a loooong process with lots of dishes, but I feel like she still knew she had the comfort available to her as she needed it, and was able to decide for herself when she was actually ready.

My LO is 20 months old and still takes a bottle of milk before bed. With baby #2 due in less than 2 months, I'd ideally like to get her drinking her nighttime milk out of a cup before her sister arrives so that there's no association between her bottle being "taken away" and the new baby getting one (I intend to breast feed but will pump and give a bottle per day from a few weeks old so that hubby can participate in feeding).

The reason I'm scared is that when I tried to transition her from a bottle to a sippy/straw cup for daytime feeds, she dropped all daytime milk and now only has water or diluted juice from her straw cup. I'd hate to have the same thing happen at night - while she eats a lot of yogurt/cheese during the day, I feel like she really needs the extra calories from the milk at night to get her through.

Any advice on how to make this transition as trauma-free as possible and still keep her drinking milk from parents who have been there, done that?
