Thanks mamas. Once he went to sleep I started reading everything online about toddler CPR. Ive taken a class before but didn't remember in the panic. I should have put him so his head was inclined to the floor before smacking him on the back. It was all instinct. I am feeling incredibly lucky that it wasn't worse and was over quickly.

Whew, good job mom!! So scary. The one time that DS choked, my mom was with me (she's an ER nurse) and we both panicked BAD.

So scary! I'm glad you were able to act so quickly-- I'm afraid that I would freeze in a situation like that, but you jumped right to the rescue.

So we are eating dinner. Ss has been refusing the high chair so for the last few weeks he's been eating while walking around. Usually he just stands next to us and takes what he wants off our plate. Tonight it was a chicken nugget. He was taking tiny bites, then all of the sudden he is gasping and gagging and spits it up. Normal gag reflex. Until he tries to swallow it again and chokes for real. It happened so fast I couldn't stop him from swallowing it again. I smacked him on the back hard (he was standing facings while I was seated) but it didn't work. I just reached into his mouth with my finger and was able to pull the chicken nugget out from the back of his throat. Then I tried to calm him so he'd stop coughing and gasping. I am pretty sure it was the scariest moment of both our lives. I can't get the panicked look on his face out of my head.
