My DD was sitting in a booster in a barstool height chair to eat her breakfast at a tall breakfast bar when she was just over 1... She kicked the bar and tipped her chair over and fell on her head. I had just turned around for one second and she was on the floor. I have never felt so terrible in my entire life- she screamed for about 20 minutes and we were out of town away from her regular doctor. Luckily she ended up OK but it could have been a serious head injusry.

Having two is really hard! Also, it's super hard to be 100% vigilant all the time! I agree with everyone to be so gentle with yourself. You are clearly a super caring and careful mom, your reaction to an easy-to-make mistake shows that!

Maybe it is because I know all of my siblings fell down the stairs at some point and survived, but I'm trying to adopt the outlook of "it is all a learning experience" for both kids and parents. I mean obviously, we do our best to keep them from getting hurt, but sometimes, they'll just do dangerous things that will terrify us and lead to lots of tears.

My little guy has face planted and split his lip soooo many times (I swear he trips on air), but he's getting better about getting his arms out to catch himself and I know how to clean up the blood he gets on crying my shirt afterwards. We're getting there, we're learning

@travellingbee: It's definitely easier with two. Especially when both of them are so young like ours! They both require constant attention, which is impossible if you're the only parent with them at the time.

SO glad he is ok, and it's ok for you too, mama

When DD was 1 I forgot to close the gate to go downstairs and in the TWO SECONDS I looked away she fell down 5-6 steps  I was besides myself. Crying, shaking, feeling guilty for SO long. Thankfully, I called her doctor first and he was SO re-assuring. First, DH was downstairs (where she landed) and said she landed up right... Somehow babies have the instinct/reflex to protect themselves. She didn't have any bruising at all, and after monitoring her all day she was totally fine. I was a giant mess for days to come. So I'm here to tell you that accidents happen, babies are resilient, and don't beat yourself up!!!

That is so scary, mama, but don't be so hard on yourself! These things happen all the time to everyone. He is okay and won't ever remember it!

One time we were driving down the highway at 90mph going to Florida and my then 3 year old turned around in her seat to grab something, and I was all OMG I FORGOT TO BUCLKE HER UP AT ALL! Mom brain is real.

@travellingbee: It's the worst feeling in the world, I know. A just fell off her changing table a few nights ago - I took 1 step back to spray her shirt with oxyclean, and she leaned forward and toppled right off. It was right before bedtime, so I was freaking petrified about letting her fall asleep. I called the pediatrician on-call who assured me that they get these calls more often than I could imagine. It happens to the best, most observant parents. Don't beat yourself up. A was totally fine the next morning, too.

@travellingbee: Hugs, girlfriends. That kind of stuff is bound to happen with kids, so don't be too hard on yourself! When Logan was just learning to climb stairs, I left his side to tend to Xander while we were outside and then the next thing I knew, he was at the top of our porch, turned to attempt to come back down, and just face planted down the step onto the brick walkway! Luckily kids are soooooooo resilient and he was fine, but I remember how awful it felt that I hadn't been watching him more closely.

This exact thing happened to my friend a few weeks back. We were in the park and her toddler fell over. She popped the baby into his car seat (on a stroller frame) to go to him. I was sitting on a nearby bench, feeding my baby. Before my very eyes, her baby leaned forward and toppled out of the seat. I had screamed to her as soon as I saw him moving (and we both dived towards him). Fortunately, she caught him as he fell. It basically ended with everyone crying but nobody really hurt.

@travellingbee: please don't beat yourself up. Wrangling two is impossible. Your alternative was letting your older LO run into traffic and you would be berating yourself for that decision too.

Don't be hard on yourself, I did the exact same thing a few months ago. Threw my 1.5 year old into her seat, went to grab my 3 year old. The 1.5 year old went to climb out of her seat and started falling head first towards the pavement. I somehow caught her, I literally have no idea how, my guardian must have been right with me that day or something.
It happens to us all, we just have to learn from it and move on to the next mistake :)

I'm sorry that happened to you! I'm sure it could have happened to any of us, and it sounds like you're doing a great job trying to balance the needs of both kids.

I only have one, and even still last week she managed to fall headfirst off our (high) bed onto the hardwood floor. She's 14 months so it wasn't quite as scary as if she were younger, but I felt SO bad.

I barely caught baby in that exact same scenario a few months ago. Just turned around to say something or do something with LO1, and turned back to see baby diving head-first out of his seat--I caught him by one arm. I shudder to think what could have happened. So, so scary. Glad LO seems to be doing well.

Oh my goodness - BIG hugs to you! It is SO hard to take care of two at once. I have to remind myself so many times to focus on those little details. Mistakes happen. I've gotten in the car, about ready to start the engine and I look back and my toddler is only buckled on top because I'm so distracted by getting everything in the car - getting my youngest buckled, and forgetting that my little budding "do it myselfer" is only partially buckled.

Try not to replay it in your mind. I know that is SO hard. But just know that you learn from everything. And these things happen. You're not alone

@travellingbee: Oh that is so scary! And I know exactly how it happens- I actually made the opposite decision just Monday- I left my toddler in the shopping cart right next to the car while I took the time to buckle the waist buckle at least on the baby in the car seat. My toddler started bucking to move the shopping cart, almost falling out and starting it moving through the parking lot.

I'm so glad your LO is doing ok. So scary but I am sure it's worse for you than him. And we've all been there where a split second decision just replays over and over.

I did the stupidest thing tonight. I was leaving a store and had both boys with me. My hands were full and I was trying to get baby into the car but make sure DS1 wasnt wandering into the parking lot so I plopped the baby into his seat and went to get DS1. When I turned around the baby was climbing out of his seat. I hadn't buckled him in. He fell headfirst out of the car. Luckily the door was not fully open and blunted his fall so that he hit his head on the door and hit the pavement with his back and bottom. I screamed and ran to catch him but wasn't fast enough. He screamed and cried for about a minute and then just whimpered. I was shaking and crying and didn't know what to do. Somehow I made it home and we have been watching him for any signs of a concussion but so far, he seems perfectly normal, amazingly. He has a bruise over his eye and under his nose and a scrape on the back of his head but other than that he is seemingly ok.
I'm so freaking angry with myself and keep replaying it in my mind. I'm sick with a cold, I have cramps from my period and am sleep deprived because of teething. I think I just had a huge lapse of judgement that could have been devastating. I'm so grateful that my stupidity didnt cause a much worse result. :crying:
