There are mesh crib bumpers and that's what we used.

The same thing happened to B 3 nights ago. It was wedged so hard in there it took me a few minutes to get it out. She had a bad mark on her leg for most the day but it didn't bruise. I was debating about getting the mesh bumper pads, but she hasn't actually done it since that night so I'll wait and see how she does. Sorry you went through that it sucks!

@.twist.: I don't recall how old L is but have you considered switching him to a floor bed?

My LO is 16m and has been consistently in a floor bed since 12m. He won't get out of bed when he wakes up, he just yells for me. His room is baby proofed so even if he did get out of bed, it'd be nbd.

I hope you find a good solution soon!

@tysonja: Yea, he's been sleeping in a diaper these days. We don't have a/c so it gets pretty hot!

is it too hot where you are for a sleep sack? :) we live in a cooler climate and so can use sleep sacks year round. I think it helps a lot for this kind of thing!

Thanks everyone!

We have breathable bumpers too. I don't really have a preference either way, but I just thought it was strange/funny how everyone talks about the bumpers and I have never heard about something like this! I have heard about babies who don't have great control over their limbs getting stuck, but his leg would not budge! it was wedged in so tightly it left marks!

That's happened to J twice since we removed his bumper - the second time was really scary, it definitely hurt him when we eventually pushed his leg through. I personally am a bumper believer, at least until they can stand and try to climb on them.

This happened to a friend reecently. They don't have a video monitor so she thought her son was just being fussy but he kept crying so she went to check and his leg was stuck. She was so scared they went to the er but he was fine once he calmed down.

That is rough! LO went through a phase of sticking her legs out for about a month. They were never painfully stuck, but required us to free them. I still personally prefer a stuck leg to other issues that come with bumpers.

We are told so often that bumpers are super dangerous. I held my breath for the first 8 months of L's life because we did use one, but it scared me.

Around 9 months we took them off because he could move his legs and arms well enough to know how to get out of the rails.

Well, last night (he's 1 year now, so we've been sleeping bumperless for a few month with no issue), last night DH and I were sitting on the couch watching tv. I heard L make a peep and, as I always do, popped on the monitor to see if he was still asleep.

At first it looked like he was just trying to get comfy, and then I realised that it looked like his legs were in the rails of the crib.

We went in and sure enough they were both in the rails, but they were stuck. DH tried for a minute to get the one out and couldn't. It was wedged right in and L was now in tears. I ran into the bathroom and grabbed the soap and ran back to his room and squirted it all over his legs. We did manage to free him but just short of DH ripping the bars off the crib.

I am so scared what would have happened if he wouldn't have made that peep or if I wouldn't have checked the monitor, and if the blood had been cut off from his legs for any longer than it was.
