Our 2 month old goes down at 9pm and up around 6:30/7. He wakes around 2am for a feeding (which my husband does) and then I take him around 5am when he gets fussy and we'll snuggle until it's "get up" time. That way we each get some sleep (me: 11-5ish, Him, 2:30-8:30) that's a big chunk.

It sounds crazy, but yes you can be that sleep deprived for weeks and months at a time! For both my girls though, they would sleep at night in 4-5 hour stretches starting around weeks 6-8. After the crazy newborn period, IMO, 4-5 hours of sleep is a good thing! Sometimes we'll get a 6 or 7 hour stretch, which is better than my 3rd tri of pregnancy anyway!

My 2nd LO is 4 months now. She goes down around 7 or 8p and wakes up at around 12am and 5am to breastfeed. she goes right back down after a night feed so it's not too bad. I don't sleep til around 12a anyway so that doesnt even count to me as a bother to "get up". I'm still up doing chores or watching tv with DH, etc... After the 5am feed, she'll wake up again but not until 8:30 or 9am...

I'm okay with this and feel pretty well-rested. But out of curiousity, I asked her ped if I could start to sleep train her. He said technically yes, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Since I'm perfectly okay with her waking up at those times, I'm not going to have her cry it out because it's not worth it to us.

Oh and I use the Baby Whisperer's EASY routine (eat-activity-sleep-you time). Used it for my first DD and now my 2nd. it works great for us. We don't have a set schedule, but because of EASY I can estimate a nap or a feeding time.

My LO is 3.5months and we're DEFINITELY sleep-training soon. We're still getting up every 2-4 hours...It's been tough.

We really did get up every 2-3 hours for 4 months. Sucky, but doable. I'd often have DH give DS a bottle for one night feeding so I at least got 4 hours straight.

I'm not sure what we are going to do but I wante to ad that after the first few weeks and especially after a month or so most babies can sleep at night for more than 2-3 hours. My LO has pretty much gone 4 hours or more at night since she was about a mo th old. So between 8am and 8 pm she gets up twice.

I'm sure that yes after another month or so even getting up twice will be tiring but I dont feel like it will be that hard to stretch things out

So I am not even TTC but I am obsessed with all things babies :) I have read intently a lot of posts about sleep training and while there's no way to know what our baby or situation will be like, I am definitely keeping the Ferber techniques in my back pocket in case our LO needs them.

Having said that, it seems like the consensus is that you should sleep train at about 4 months. Well, what if your baby is a horrible sleeper before then?! I know newborns need to eat every 2-3 hours, but you can't possibly get up that often for 4 months! I've done a little research and it seems like everyone really likes The Baby Whisperer for baby routines. Check out this blog post for a pretty detailed example: http://noobmommy.com/2008/12/easy-routine-from-baby-whisperer.html#.TrxOblZSlz0

Anyway, what have you all done or what are you planning on doing? Just letting the baby lead their schedule for the first few months, or are you going to use a specific approach?
