I'm in AB Canada. Where we are you have to be 4 on March 1 to register for Kindergarten in September.

DS missed that cut off this year by three weeks. He will be 5.5 when he starts.

Sept 1 here (MA). I go back and forth on this because my kids are Oct and Nov bdays, so they will be among the oldest, which definitely has benefits. However, LO1 is 3.5 and is already starting to read and write, but she isn't eligible to start K for 2.5 years, which seems insane to me. Luckily, we live in a city which offers a Jr K program, so she will be able to start that program in a little over a year.

Dallas Texas is September 1 (5 for kinder)
All of the big private schools follow this too, to align with the public schools.

Our daycare follows this cutoff pretty strictly, so that the kids are tracked into the right year from the beginning.
DS is a September birthday, so he is entering 2's even though he will turn 3 immediately after school starts. He has a classmate who is still 1 (she turns 2 mid-July). At this age, there is a pretty huge difference between them, but I know the gap will narrow.

I'm in MO. Aug 1 cut off. My oldests bdays is Aug 1. We are hoping to send her to a charter school in our neighborhood. It's a lottery to get in. Their cut-off is sept 1 so we are going to try right after she turns 5. If she doesn't get in, we will likely try again the following year.

Our district (in a Chicago suburb) is September 1. I think most of Illinois is September 1. Our eldest will have his 5th birthday one week and start kindergarten the next. My husband had a similar experience. We think that our LO is ready for kindergarten, so him being the youngest isn't too much of a worry.

I'm in SoCal and the cutoff is sept 1 but kids can go to tk w sept-dec 2 birthdays. In my case I think the cutoff worked out. My daughter falls in the TK range and. I think it'll be good for her to be the oldest in her class, so she has some time to develop socially a bit more as she can be timid. I just wish it was a full day program. Ds has an August bday and I think that's good because he is very ready socially and academically to be with older kids.

Our cut-off used to be Oct. 1 and H has an Oct. 7 birthday, but they just moved it to Aug. 1 and now I definitely have to pay an extra year of DCP costs for both girls (public schools charge tuition for any children in K who are not 5 by the cutoff).

Cut off is 12/31 and my son who has a 12/16 birthday was kept back a year.

It's been nothing but great for him. Interestingly, in my state, K isn't required, kids must begin attending school at the age of 7.

This thread is part of the reason why I think we should have a national cut off. I get the whole "leaving the power up to the states" mindset, but I think we'd be a lot better off if we standardized it.

I'm in NJ, in a suburb of NYC, and our Pre-k cutoff (same as K) is Sept 30. I'm from Texas originally, where the cut off is 9-1, so it seems "late" to me, although NY is Dec., so we are "early" compared to them.

In any case, I don't really care where the cut off is. My girls are July and August, so they will both start on time.

PA, the cutoff is August 31st (just changed from September 15th last year), and is different depending on which school district you're in. My oldest is an August baby, but I'm due with #2 on September 14th, so it stinks to have to pay $10-$12k in daycare costs for an additional year due to a few weeks (especially considering that depending on when I deliver, had the timing been different she may have made it in). There is no option to be given an exemption or test in. Of course I have no idea how baby #2 is going to be academically, but with E having been in daycare since she was 1, I can't imagine holding her back from K a full year if she had been born 3 weeks later.

In addition, each school district decides whether they do full day or half day K, and currently where we are it's half day K. So we have to wait an extra year *and* still pay a big chunk of money for daycare for that K year. I personally think the half day K is a huge waste (they spend more time being transported around than they do actually at school, and don't get recess because of the shorter day). There are whispers the district is going to try to make the change to full day K :).

Obviously baby #2 isn't even born yet, so I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, and who knows what the future holds! It's just kind of in my peripheral vision right now. I know that there always has to be a cutoff, I just wish it wasn't so variable and that there were other options besides going to private K and testing into 1st grade.

@Foodnerd81: Yeah, with full time we can't really step it up. The school says they can tailor it to be more challenging, so we'll see. I'm not sure how other preschools work, but in daycare (at least the ones I'm familiar with) there are separate rooms for "preschool" and "pre-k". And typically you move up through all the rooms, spending 1-1.25 years in each. But DS will spend 2 full years in the same room with the same teacher and the 2nd year a class full of kids younger than him. I'm just kind of worried about it.

@Foodnerd81: @katsupgirl: TK is optional and only for kids that are 5 between Sept 2-Dec 2. I think CA started it so parents wouldn't be upset when they moved the cutoff date. It's at the elementary schools and they have their own curriculum. The kids go to K the next year. We don't have free public pre-k here (unless you qualify for low income programs) so this is another option for the fall Birthday kids. Some families choose to leave their kids in private pre-k instead of sending them to TK.

Here is some more info:

@Mrs. Champagne: it sounds a lot like TK here. A lot of places don't have TK or Jr K but if it is an option then that's ideal. I like that. :) I really wish we put more into early education here but I guess that's a whole other can of worms!
