We have to do a "no cost" fundraiser where we just designate them for our grocery store card, and we have to volunteer 10 hours per school year (20 in the older grades.) I don't really know of any non tuition based preschools around here except head start which you have to income qualify for, so I don't think too much about that. I went to private and public schools growing up and had to fundraise at all of them. Eta, $14 for every 3 hr session is pretty low too... At least where I am.

@Bao: My older daughter is a public grade 1, and for the last few years we have participated in every fundraiser that happens. That means:
-magazine subscription sales (I hate this one, but it brings in a lot of money for the school)
-a weird glow stick dance
-pizza lunches
-the 'big ask' in that they ask every family to contribute a base $ if they can, with the idea that they don't feel obligated to contribute to other fundraisers, but we do...
-poinsettia sales
-Scholastic book orders and book fairs

And then as a school there are some other fundraisers that are done for national charities that we participate in:
-Terry Fox Run/Walk
-Jump Rope for Heart
and I think one other that I am forgetting.

And that doesn't count the fundraising for activities that we participate in (choir and Sparks are the ones that fundraise). It seems endless.

I feel like it depends on what the money is going towards raising. We have a spring fling at our daycare to raise money for technology and books for their small school library. I feel that is worth it even though we pay tuition already.

We're in a co-op preschool, so it's private, but we have fundraisers several times a year. Supposedly our tuition is a little lower than other area preschools because of the ways in which the parents are required to volunteer, but the fundraisers go toward things like new playground equipment and to offset some other expenses not covered by tuition (extra building improvements, etc). Frankly we don't love all the fundraising because it mostly comes out of our own pockets anyway, but every year they ask the parents if they'd rather do fundraising or pay higher tuition and the fundraising seems to win out.
@Ree723: This is the third year at my DD's preschool, so we've done lots of fundraisers. Wall me if you need ideas!

We go to a church based preschool. I paid $20 to join the PTA. Does that count as fundraising?

The money goes towards events the PTA puts on throughout the year for the teachers, like teacher breakfasts and treats for them. Which is more than great.

The only other thing is that each class has to donate to a "class basket" to put up for auction at their spring carnival. The proceeds of the carnival goes towards the local children's hospital and a children's charity camp. Last year they raised $62,000!

@Ree723: I'm in the same position as you this year at the same kind of school. :) We have a few fundraising things in place for this year and the first major one goes out on Monday. Wall me if u want to talk PTO ideas. :) I'm having fun with it because it is only for one year until my daughter likely starts public school next year.

I am into making money and not spending money on fundraisers. I feel a little obligated to participate sometimes. We will have one major one a quarter and maybe add on a few minor ones if the parents come up with stuff they want to organize.

We have lots of fundraisers as our LO attends a preschool attached to a church, which subsequently qualifies as a charity based organisation. We don't pay tuition as all kids in England are entitled to 15 hrs/week of preschool education funded by the government, but the amount the government pays isn't great so to top up the stuff they're able to do/provide to the kids, there are fundraisers all year round.

I don't know exactly what kind of fundraisers we do yet as we've only been there for two weeks, but as I have now been asked to be the chairperson for the preschool committee (head of the PTA equivalent), I suppose I will become well acquainted with the fundraising aspect and be expected to run/organise a lot of them. Sigh....

Char goes to a co-op preschool and her tuition is really low... BUT we have to buy scrip each month, "volunteer" time in the classroom/doing maintenance/doing housekeeping duty, and then there are fundraisers throughout the year that we need to participate in. It seems like a lot, but it's stuff that only we have to do (vs. asking people to buy candy/gift wrap/etc.)

My DD goes to public school and it started this week and ends next week. She is selling food items and sports tumblers. There is a lot of pressure to sell because the kids win prizes according how many items they sell. So far she has earned a minion necklace and if she sells 175 items she wins an iPad. Yeah right! We are doing our best to support because the funding goes to the classroom. Anyone want to buy a sports tumbler?? :silly:

With such low tuition I would probably be fine with donating. But I would ask for more clarification about how the funds are used and see if you can direct it towards the pre school program specifically. I remember your post about the fence and that's a bad situation, maybe you can ask about the parents at your school being allowed to specifically donate towards having that issue resolved.

@Bao: Is the PTA district wide or school specific? Here it's school specific. Our fundraiser is actually for the school (not the PTA). I'd probably feel more vested in it if I knew we were at the school more than one year. LO will move to our zoned school for Kinder next year.

And the itty bitty playground that the Pre-K kids get to use is crappy. I'd love to contribute toward new equipment for it specifically.
