I only buy it if I can really use it or want it. I exercise my right to say no to peer pressure. I do feel a little bad though. My coworkers even do their side business catalogs too, like jewelry, bags...like what Tupperware used to be.

I don't feel obligated. People set out a catalog or order form in the break room/kitchen. Most of the stuff is crap and I'd rather donate cash if they just asked me. Unless it's girl scout cookies -- I'm ALL about girl scout cookies.

We're also not really allowed to fundraise for our children at work. Once in a while there's a form or box of chocolate bars discreetly left in the lunch room or something, but not allowed to approach directly, and anybody in a management position is not allowed to at all.

That said, I still get hit up quite frequently for other various causes that our agency itself is supporting.

I always buy something small. I don't feel obligated, but I like to help kids out. I know it's a pain for them, but everything is underfunded these days and I like to hope if they're joining sports then at least they're doing something active and staying out of trouble. And schools always need help. I just bought GS cookies last week, but there's only one other employee in the office anymore, so I don't get asked often.

@blackbird: That should be a rule everywhere! I'm for fundraising, but it's such a turn off when it's shoved in your face.

And no, I don't ever want to pay $15 for one roll of wrapping paper...you're literally ripping up dollar bills when you use it!

@looch: I use this rule with the GS hanging out at Publix. Your mom may have been a scout, but you little girl in your green uniform need to speak up if you want to sell me something.

i don't mind when these catalogs or whatever are set out in the teacher's lounge (same with my coworkers who sell Avon or those jewelry things or whatever). That way, people who want to buy can, but there's no pressure.

Honestly, I've never been pressured at work--- guess im lucky!!

I really try to limit it. Especially if I don't know the kid or if its the parent selling for the kid.

Most of those fundraisers do accept donations and that way you know the school is getting 100%.

I ALWAYS buy stuff that coworkers/their kids are selling. I'm trying to limit it recently, though, to one order per child. So if your kid is in cheerleading and band and church group, I'm not going to buy something every single time. It's sort of working out...

They're actually not allowed here! You cannot fundraise! It's GREAT. If someone is selling something, it gets around but they cannot come to you and harass you. They can set a sheet out, but they can't bug you! It's freaking awesome. I don't want to buy your shitty ass frozen pizzas or cookie dough or overpriced wrapping paper or magazines.

When your co-workers bring in their kid's school fundraisers, do you feel obligated to buy something?

I do! I try to find something useful, but it's hard to! Plus, they're ridiculously priced...
