We only have one late afternoon snack. Last week we did a bag of Pirates Booty and an apple sauce. She gets yogurt, cheese sticks and fruits as part of her lunch so I don't do those for snacks.

@erinbaderin: My oldest has always been a pretty picky eater. I don't necessarily worry about balanced meals, I just look at what he is eating for the entire day. His biggest meal is at dinner time, I can usually get him to eat a lot of veggies, etc. But for my toddler, his biggest meal is at lunch time. He eats way better in the middle of the day then at the end.

Ok, this has made me feel a lot better! Thank you for all the ideas, and also for saying that a protein at snack isn’t really necessary - I have way more ideas if I go with that. A carb and a fruit I can totally handle.

We are only allowed to pack one item for snack. They eat their snack right before recess, if they have a big snack it cuts into playing time.

I've done:
Cuties (already peeled and ready to eat)
Strawberries
Banana
Granola bars
Pretzels

I don't worry about making sure it is a large snack, he gets lunch just over an hour later.

We do yogurt and applesauce pouches, string cheese and raw veggies and fruit cut up into bite sized pieces. Edamame, chestnuts, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.

Costco has these great mini energy muffins but my kids have yet to discover how amazing and delicious "baked" snacks are. And no, my kids don't only eat healthy. They have their fair share of junk food and processed snacks too!

Yogurt seems like a good idea, but I agree it would be easier to focus on protein at breakfast and lunch. Other idea would be hummus with pita chips or beef/turkey jerky.

I don't think you need to send a protein with the snack if they are getting protein at the other meals.

Mine is allergic to pure milk, so our snacks include:

Breakfast Bar
Bagel
Applesauce
Grapes
Strawberries
Chex or Cheerios
Mini Muffins

I try to match a carb with a fruit usually.

The morning snack is the least important to me because my son eats a significant breakfast.

If he eats too much snack, he then won't eat lunch at 11:30 so I keep it small. A small yogurt, a protein powder mini muffin, applesauce, crackers, that kind of thing.

Our school has two “nutrition breaks” so I send a big amount and I’m not sure when he eats what. Today I’m sending:
A kiwi
Crackers
Cheese
Two turkey pepperettes (he loves these)
A kiwi
Sliced peppers and cucumbers
Yogurt drink
Apple sauce pouch
Fruit leather

He doesn’t eat it all but must prefers lots of small options to a sandwich.

What do you send for school snacks? Our school suggests the morning snack be relatively healthy, so last week I did goldfish crackers and cheese every day. It was a hit on day 1, but by day 4 none of it got eaten. This week I thought I’d change it up so this morning I had packed apples and cheese, and got “cheese AGAIN? I had cheese every day!”

The thing is that I’d like to send some kind of protein with either fruit or crackers, but what? Today I sent ham, but that’s about all I can think of. They can’t have nuts (and B wouldn’t eat them anyway), and I’m at a loss.
