My son is in a charter school, they ask us to pay a nominal $35 fee for supplies then they purchase them. It doesn't seem like enough. They did ask us to purchase a calculator and a 3-ring binder, and I'll buy extra pens, pencils, and paper. We have a stock pile of spiral notebooks and crayons. He's going into 6th grade, and I'll probably spend $60 after the fee, backpack and "extra" supplies.

I have several students who can't afford supplies or they just don't bring them. Most years I stalk the sales so it doesn't get to pricey. I'm lucky enough that my DH doesn't complain and his boss donates winter coats so that helps. Plus I have one parent that always sends in extras. Over the summer I probably spend $100 but they deserve it.

For preschool we pay a supplies "fee" of about 240 usd per semester and we don't have to buy them. Seems like a lot to me now that I read this but I am glad we don't have to buy ourselves. Then in kinder and grade school supplies are included in tuition where my kids will go....

That seems reasonable to me. Around here, there are lists of required materials that you can either buy separately or through the PTA...boxes cost anywhere from $50-$80 per kid.

I think with DS's backpack and all his supplies, I spent less than $40. The school district just gives us a supply list and we go by that.

For me, though, I plopped down $514 in textbooks.

I always buy extra of stuff on the list and stock up. My mom did that, too, and most years she didn't have to buy hardly anything, cause she'd have a huge stash of school supplies. I'll be doing that, also!

I only had to buy a new portfolio binder for this year. About a dollar. I already had a bin, slippers, blankets, a folder and water bottle from last year. I usually see supplies on sale June thru mid July. I heard the supplies get way easier in middle/high school so just have to budget the elementary school years.
@lilteacherbee: I like to give back the supplies too. I feel so bad for the parents!

I'm lucky enough to teach at a school that gives each grade level team a small budget for us to purchase extra supplies, folders, etc. Sometimes I feel like we get too many supplies (I don't need Elmer's wet glue or a jillion dry erase markers) but I try to give extra paper, cleaning wipes, etc back to kids at the end of the year to reuse the next year.

I also got 4 folders and a pack of BIC pens for free and plan to send those in a care package to my little cousin who just started college.

Since I didn't have to buy anything, I could pick and choose items.lol I do plan to stock up gradually for when she goes to Pre-K.

In our house, we're so excited about back to school!

With two in school and a long list of needed supplies, we were worried about how much we'd spend on supplies.

We had to buy school slippers and drinking glasses (they both use glass in the classroom) and art supplies, tissues, erasers, lunch boxes, cleaning supplies etc.

We went to target today and got everything for $87. I still feel like it's a lot.

How much did you spend?
