@Pancakes: Those little boxes are a disaster for my son. He can't puzzle everything back into them, which is why I went with this solution. If it's too big, there is also a smaller version.

That is how kinder was as well, they had tables with sectioned bins where the supplies were kept.

@looch: that's a great idea! Our list says that the pencil box "must fit in desk" but then give no dimensions. They sat at tables for K last year so I'm not sure what kind of desks they'll use in 1st grade.

In case you need a pencil case, I wanted to drop off this idea I had: it's to use an ArtBin case, so that all the materials fit inside.

https://smile.amazon.com/ArtBin-12-Inch-Quick-Carrying-Translucent/dp/B001ELDERU/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1502128739&sr=8-9&keywords=artbin

Also, if you need to write the names on things, I recommend a P Touch label maker.

@looch: Honestly that kind of thing has been one of the reasons I was really sad to see my LO graduate from preschool! Her public school seems pretty nice and has good ratings as far as performance so I trust that things will be ok and all, but there were definitely some luxuries at her preschool that we will miss!

@looch: it is a burden but I hope I can find them for 20 cents, so it would be about 30 dollars. Of course, I could just *hope* that my students bring them. I could also just go without, or wait weeks on the district warehouse. They provided everything else for me. It's just that all the folders are gone.

@DesertDreams88: Yes, I agree, I am trying hard to teach my son to be careful with his stuff at home so that he doesn't waste things. It's so easy to buy a box of markers every time I go to the store, but I try not to because it just reinforces bad habits.

I really am having a difficult time with the 150 folders though, that seems like a lot of burden to put on the teachers if the school system isn't supplying them.

@DesertDreams88: I didn't mean for my comment to be critical. I'm just very surprised about the consumption rate. Growing up, I went to public school and I always had my own supplies. My son, who started kindergarten last year, also has his own. I just thought that was how it worked. I honestly had no idea so many schools had communal supplies until I saw people talking about it here.

ETA: we talk about waste and responsibility all the time at home. But I'm not sure every parent helicopters over their kids like I do.

@MamaG: just ask :) or teacher wish lists are great, too. That's what I give out - about 10 items, and I get about 10 donations (whether I have 35 or 160 kids). I bolded "folders" on my list this year, so we'll see! The hard things is, they're needed almost right away, so I don't know what I'm going to do.

@DesertDreams88: I hate that teachers have to supply so much. As a family that can afford to provide, I really want to do so and alleviate our teachers burdens. How would you suggest finding out what a teacher needs? Our Kinder teacher had some things posted on her wall on meet the teacher night as her "wish list". I went to Target and bought about 12 boxes of fun band aids (I think she asked for 2-3). I don't even care if I supplied her for 4 years (well I feel a little bad about her having to store them somewhere). But things like folders, I cant imagine you wait until the last minute to purchase.

Maybe I should just email our teacher (yes, we already know our teacher assignment) and see if she responds. I'm not sure when teachers are back to duty here, I know administration is back this week.

@lamariniere: As a 5th grade self-contained teacher, I would maybe consider it, but probably decide no. There are SO MANY THINGS for teachers to have running through their brains, and replenishing 35 students' individual pencils and glue.... not near the top of my list. And remember, my students aren't getting it from their parents, they get it from me, so it's on me to re-stock them.

And as a 5th grade departmentalized and now as an 8th grade teacher, I definitely wouldn't. I try to streamline my classroom as much as possible and that sounds like a headache for me. They bring their own pencils but I have a box of free ones if they needs. Everything else is in communal bins, except erasers. Re-stocking is not really an issues except glue sticks, erasers, and pencils.

There's a good reason why pretty much all classrooms use communal supplies. It is more efficient. Teachers know what works and what doesn't. Trust them. Or teach your kids responsible use of materials at home.

@2littlepumpkins: There were some projects that the entire grade did at once, like for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. For those, we asked for cash from parents to cover and believe it or not, we had very poor participation. I was a room parent and in order not to rock the boat and make sure all the kids had materials, my co room mom and I forked over the cash.

Once you get into public school, it really seems that people are a lot less willing to shell out constantly. My personal opinion is that if the teachers want to do an extra project, I support it, but it needs to be realistic in terms of how much it costs and how often. With a lot of kids on free or reduced lunch, $5 is a lot to some families.

@looch: I imagine there will also be wish lists throughout the year. Dd's preschool teachers had cooking lists and stuff like that requested every other week it seemed like! But I loved that they went above and beyond with planning and all the parents were really quick to volunteer, so it was nbd to help out. :)

As for testing, when I was an aide we had to test Kindergarten students. 😳 It wasn't that long of a test but still kind of crazy.

@DesertDreams88: that does seem like a lot of work for you as the teacher but that's great that you help them learn to take care of their own stuff! I have trouble getting my 4.5 year old to close her own glue and pick up her art stuff and I only have two kids at home! 😂

@DesertDreams88: could you do something like a ziplock baggie with a pencil/glue stick for each kid with their name on it? If those are the main supplies they use up quickly/lose, maybe that could be a small step to start controlling use and foster responsibility? Out of curiosity, how old are your students?

Just chiming in. Communal supplies are tape -because students don't know when to use or not use, folder paper-because it is too big to store, post its-use it up and I need it for specific things--range of colors help with color coding, glue-too big to store.
I also don't like that our supplies list is so big but our grade level teachers disagree sometimes and this satisfies everyone, well-except the parents. We give back unused supplies at the end of the year though. A few teachers want notecards every year, a few more want 4 red pens and another 3 teachers want 4 paper towel rolls. Then there are teachers who want to do more with less but the parents will never know that because they defer to teachers who want all the supplies. It is crazy!!

@looch: @lamariniere: yes, the communal aspect of supplies is definitely the downfall. From the teacher's perspective, it is a lot quicker to just restock a big box of glue sticks, and take them out when necessary, rather than trust that each student has a functioning glue stick in their desk ready to go whenever. However, teaching that responsibility and self-management, while more difficult, has more pay-off in the long run! I do teach my students about judicious use of their glue sticks and making sure everything is securely capped before putting it away so it doesn't dry out. Good skills to teach at home, too.

I have found that with certain supplies, I can not give them out/set them out freely or share them communally. Erasers are the main culprit, they end up on the floor too often. Some years it has also been pencils; I started charging 10 cents for a pencil and the number of lost/broken pencils dramatically decreased. Also, some kids would buy like a whole handful, haha :)

@looch: oh yeah true, the 1st grade note is a little weird. Maybe they want to save them for nice projects then. In my district, we start testing at 2nd grade, to track progress and "get them ready" for the "real" test at 3rd grade. I don't love it, but basically, often, there's many more district, school, and teacher tests than there are state tests.

@looch: That's the same with school supplies here. Each kid has their own set, and part of the learning process is learning how to take care of and keep track of their things. I can't imagine one glue stick and one pencil per kid per week. That sounds insane to me! My son used like 5 pencils and 7 glue sticks all last year and at least 2 of the glue sticks were because he lent them out to other kids and never got them back.

I did the inventory of what was left over from last year and then went supply shopping today. I had to go to 2 different stores and I'm still missing a few items that I'm going to order on amazon. It's impossible to find 4 ring binders here!

@DesertDreams88: I didn't think there was standardized testing in first grade.,, at least where I live it begins in third.

I think the over abundance of supplies and making them communal contributes to the problem. Kids don't learn to take care if the items because there is always a replacement, instead of teaching kids how to care for the materials and use them properly do they last, we teach them there is always another. I see that with my son and I hate it!

My husband grew up abroad. When he was in first grade he had one set of colored pencils for the entire year. He says that a lot of what they did was preparing materials, learning how to use them. It shows in the way he functions as an adult. I have 10000 pens, he uses a specific one, with refills.
