@Teachermama: Communal supplies, especially for the younger kids seems to contribute to prolonged illness. I know a little exposure to germs is supposed to be a good thing and build up immunities, but this past year was ROUGH on the kids in terms of illness in my son's school.

Communal typically, but depends on the teacher. Personally for me, communal is gross! I've seen kids chewing on pencils and they all share the pencils.

@PinkElephant: you could just buy two packs of the neon pencils so there's enough for everyone. Especially if you usually buy extra supplies to donate anyway.

@PinkElephant: We use Ticonderoga where I work (a historical society) for staff and the cheapies for patrons and I definitely notice a difference! They are so much nicer, so I'm glad you are getting them. I am also a big office/school supplies nerd and I'm so excited to go supply shopping when my girls are ready for school.

@PinkElephant: If they asked for a single folder and a single comp notebook and they didn't specify color, I would have no issue buying whatever my son chose.

Did they ask for the first pencils, the thicker ones? If so, I have a hard time sharpening those, i am looking for an electric sharpener that can handle them!

@lamariniere: Aww - I'd feel fine about getting more glue if it were b/c my child was being nice and sharing! :)

@looch: Yup, I know it's important as they get older to follow instructions about colors for folders/notebooks. In this case, they want one of each, no color specified, and they asked for names on them, so I assume these are to be their journal/take home folder. That's weird about the pencil box in your situation!

@mediagirl: That sounds communal to me! I probably also have better things I should be doing with my time, haha :). But I have this picture of enjoying shopping with DD. In reality, there will probably be a lot of whining involved, but oh well!

I'm guessing they are all communal. We are instructed to bring in all supply items in a disposable bag with our kid's name on it, not on each item.

I ordered all the school supplies through SchoolKidz. I don't have time to shop for that stuff. :)

Communal, even though they asked for a pencil case, labeled with the child's name.

I buy exactly what is on the list, not more, not less. If they ask for Crayola crayons in an 8 pack, I get those. It's easier because the kids don't have a personal workspace, they sit at a table, and the supplies were kept in a bin on the table. If they ask for a red folder, I buy a red folder, even though it's just for my kid to use and he would probably select a Monster Truck one if he had to choose. The reasoning is that there's a lot going on in the room and the teacher can easily see if everyone has their specific folders out at the right time with a quick glance over the room.

My son's supplies were individual. Although, I think he kept lending out his glue sticks (and not getting them back) because he needed 3 in the last two months of school.

@bhbee: it's seriously my favorite. When I worked, I always led school supply drives at work to fund classes in need. I adopted a teacher friend's class a few times. If I buy my kids' supplies through the PTA, I will still make a point of shopping for supplies to donate.

@Andrea: this is my best guess as to what will happen. I will just double check sincecid hate to make a big deal out of letting DD pick out a special homework folder and composition book, then not get to use them (though I think that's very unlikely).

@LemonJack: @lady baltimore: the supply list specifies the Ticonderoga pencils! 🙂 I'll definitely buy them; I just won't buy colors if they're communal bc I know it will cause drama over who gets which specific color.

ALSO, thanks for exposing why these are "the good pencils" - when I got the list I was googling to figure out what the deal was with a specific brand of pencils! 🙂 I'm sure it's annoying as a teacher to deal with so many pencils.

As I teacher, I will put in a plea for buying the Dixon Ticonderoga pencils whether your child will use them or not. They are SO much easier to sharpen than the cheapies! You don't have to splurge for the fun colors if they're just going in a bin, though.

I don't teach elementary, but when I spent time in primary classrooms they always had communal pencils. Because of that, I personally wouldn't splurge on the fanciest ones. Just steer clear of the Office Max ones. They're terrible!

Which way does your LO's class handle school supplies - are they communal, or individual? I just got DD1's supply list for kindergarten, and I kind of want to find out before I buy...there's not much I could really personalize from the list, but I might, say, splash out for the Ticonderoga pencils painted neon colors if I know they'll be exclusively for DD's use - but I wouldn't start that drama if they're going into a supply pool which means only about 3/4 of her class would get to have a fun colored pencil. I'm assuming things like markers/pencils/folders I buy will go to my kid, but things like a six pack of glue sticks might go into group supplies, which is fine by me!

I am a huge school supply nerd; sooooo excited to shop with DD!
