@looch: nope. All her supplies are going in a big bag were dropping off the day before school starts. All the extras are going in there and I'll just mention it to the teachers. Parents aren't allowed in the building on a day to day basis. So, if during the year I decide to buy extras it'll just go in her backpack. So other parents would never see! But I also plan to be involved in the PTA...so I guess that can be viewed as gaining favoritism? Can't really control how other people think! I'm going to be involved with the school because I want to be. :)

@regberadaisy: do you worry at all about creating an evironment where other parents (those who can't or won't send extra supplies) are misconstruing your goodwill and see it as trying to get in the teachers good graces and create favoritism?

I don't want to make it a big deal, but for example, I would be totally willing to buy one of those classroom packages of markers (or whatever) if the teacher needed it and asked for it, but I wouldn't want the other parents to know or feel they needed to do something similar. I know other people want to make a show of it and that bugs me!

My school does communal stationary. Parents are charged a very reasonable flat fee (except our free/reduced lunch kids, which is about 70-80% of out school) and we buy everything.

I love it. It means I have exact quantities of precisely what I need. It also eliminates the issues with children not turning up with a pencil or parents choosing to buy things that they are assume are for me but aren't (whiteboard markers are a prime example - my students use them daily).

The parents love it because they don't need to go source things themselves and there aren't any surprises.

DD1 is starting UPK this year at her elementary school. I don't think it's out of reason. Things like a folder, notebook, crayons, wipes, Kleenex, paper towels etc.

Nothing's getting changed overnight, teachers are spending their own money to buy supplies, that's not right either. I'm happy to do my part. They don't do communal stock of things like crayons, but I'm planning to bring in extras of paper towels, Kleenex etc on supply drop off day. I randomly buy extra fun stuff for the daycare classroom beyond the basics. Our girls teachers have always gone the extra mile to do fun projects that they pay for the supplies. I don't mind returning the goodwill with extras and plan to do the same at the grade school level.

Teachers are under appreciated and this is part of my small way to say thank you!

I've been surprised by all the school supply articles this year. I didn't really know it was a hot topic (and I teach!)
@looch: it's so true that schools aren't funded, but society is a LONG way from properly valuing public education (and the issue is really, really complex) and teachers aren't going to let their students suffer to prove a point. I know I wouldnt :bummed:

the list isn't extensive, but i'm all in if it was. I know a lot of teachers scramble to find ways to make supplies stretch, and if I can help do my part for our kids, then i'm good with that.

My view is this: If parents and teachers continue to spend their own money to stock the classrooms, then we will never get the message across that the schools aren't adequately funded. We spend $50,000 a year to incarcerate criminals, but we spend less than $15,000 a year to educate a child.

It's not about a $1 pack of crayons, it's about the bigger picture for me. Having said that, I provide what is asked, within reason.

Do you feel like your school has an extensive school supply list, or does it feel about right to you?

Our school requests quite a few things, but they all make complete sense e.g. hand soap, kleenex, crayons, etc. I'm personally happy to help improve my child's education and environment in any way possible, though.

I heard some other parents grumbling about the amount of things they needed to buy, but I thought this article shared an interesting perspective: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/why-i-dont-resent-the-school-supply-list-anymore_us_57962310e4b0e339c23f4848
