I went to school in England for a while and it was so much easier having a uniform. I really wish I could have my kids go to a school that wears uniform. whenever i drive by a school and see them wearing their jeans, sweats and tshirts it just really turns me off. they look way too casual to be going to school.

here in japan, all kids have to wear uniforms, both private and public schools. even though they are all wearing uniforms, you can tell there is a big difference in how they wear the uniform. some girls have their skirts shorter or their ties tied differently. i like the idea of having uniforms but i don't think it makes much difference as to how they treat each other. i think you can still tell by how the uniforms are worn, who the "cool" kids are and who aren't. i don't think it stops them from making fun of each other or from being nicer to each other.

As a school aged kid, I probably would have hated it, but not because it is a uniform, but because when you think of uniforms, I always think of the old school Catholic school styled ones...the plaid jumpers and peter pan collared shirts.

As a parent, I think it is a great idea. There's little stress in the morning about picking out what to wear and you don't have to be worried about spending so much money on clothes.

I like the idea of school uniforms, but not because it gives a uniform look (it doesn't), but because students are much more likely to follow a dress code. There are no issues of students wearing offensive t-shirts, because t-shirts are not allowed. No low cut shirts, too short skirts (well, could happen, but less likely), and other similar clothing issues.

I taught in a private school last year, and while it gave the kids a more uniform look overall, you could still see who had money and who didn't, at least at this school where uniforms were guidelines more than "you must wear this EXACT shirt"
By the end of the school year, you could tell who bought their jumper where by how faded it looked.

I agree with @tksjewelry. My husband went to Catholic school and since everyone wore a uniform it wasn't about who had the best clothes, it was who had the it backpack, shoes, bracelet, hair accessory, car, etc. I think there will always be a social hierarchy in schools and uniforms won't change that.

My husband did like that with his uniform he didn't have to put any effort into picking out clothes in the mornings. That is a plus to me as well.

Where I live all schools have uniforms and students are expected to wear them. I think it's good. You don't have to worry about what to wear each day and even though everyone is wearing the same thing there is plenty of scope for personalising/showing your identity. Probably the main reason I like it is because it does eliminate most of the bullying/teasing associated with what students are wearing. It just doesn't happen.

I want uniforms even in public school. Generic ones (like blue and khaki not jean bottoms, red and blue tops no logos, etc). Then you can buy those for the entire school year. You can resell them or save them for other kids. I think it evens out some playing field. Also I don't have to buy as many clothes or even really worry about what my kid is wearing.

Oh hands down I think mandatory uniforms are a good idea..at least until high school if not all the way through. I have a couple different perspectives on this. I wore school uniforms in a public school setting form 3-6th grade. It was awesome! It made me feel pride in my school, I knew that when the uniform was on that it was time to work, we all looked the same, we didn't pick on people for not having brand name things, we couldn't tell who the rich and poor kids were, etc. I loved it as a kid! I got up and knew immediately what I would be wearing. I had plenty of time to "express myself" after school and on the weekends and in the summer. It was honestly no big deal.

Now, as a teacher I would 100% vote in favor of uniforms. I truly believe that it helps kids take pride in their work and helps them focus and lead to better results and fewer discipline problems. Not to mention, my job would be a lot easier if I didn't have to constantly tell Susie to stop messing with her bedazzled vest or stop and tie the bow on Jane's dress or stop a bragging match between what boy has the nicest brand of sweatpants. I just like things neat and orderly and I love kids in uniforms.

I like having clothes as a way to express myself, and I think that will be good for my LO too. And like others said, if people aren't making fun of you for your clothes, they'll just find something else. So you might as well at least be comfortable in what you want to wear while it happens.

Trust me, I went to catholic school. Even with uniforms everyone knows who has money and who doesn't. Cool kids are still cool kids and geeks are still geeks. If it isn't the "cool" jeans than it is the "cool" shoes or socks or hair bobs, or whatever. Kids just know. I went to both public and private and the only difference was that I froze my rear off at private because I had to wear an ugly polyester skirt all winter. I would have much rather have been uncool and warm than uncool and miserable.

I think uniforms is a GREAT idea.
Kids don't have to stress about looking cute or having new clothes, parents can save $, dress codes don't need to be enforced. Good stuff.

I am not going to lie, when I was in highschool I wished often that we were made to wear uniforms for many reasons. I hated picking out clothes to wear, I hated what other people would wear (mostly the hooker looking girls) and I hate that people are identified so often by what they wear.

I think kids will always find a way to make fun of each other. I only went to private school for a couple of years early on, but I remember even then that not all uniforms were 100% alike. Some kids will have starched, clean shirts every day, some will have wrinkly, not totally clean shirts. Same with skirt/pants. Some pants/skirts will be hemmed properly, some won’t be. Some kids will have nicer shoes than other kids. I think uniforms might cut down on clothing related bullying, but even with uniforms, there will be differences that bullies will pick up on.

i agree with you. some people just can't afford all those clothes and (gasp) even wear the same clothes all week! unfortunately, kids that age notice and tease. although, i personally wouldn't want to wear uniforms.

I'm not talking about private schools where they are mandatory for some. I was talking to one of the parents that lives next door and she was saying how she wished public schools would have mandatory uniforms. She joked that it would be cheaper than constantly buying new clothes to keep up with fads.

Later I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea,, but not for her reason. I think back to all the times in middle and high school where very nice girls would get made fun of because she didn't have the latest jeans or shirts. Some very smart and nice girls got made fun of for being so poor that they wore the same outfits twice in a week sometimes.

I wonder how children in private school differ from children in public school. (not educational wise.) I wonder if children who all wear the same thing are nicer to each other because you can't make fun of the low income kid's shoes because he's wearing the same ones as you.

What do you think?
