@googly-eyes: my DH wore uniforms and he says his classmates still had ways of competing with each other. Kids were picked on if they didn't have the trendy shoes or backpacks.

I think school uniforms are pretty cute, especially if there is plaid involved. It probably makes getting dressed each morning easier. I bet back to school shopping is a breeze for parents if they are buying uniforms.

I went to public school and did not have to wear uniforms. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I do see both sides, though.

I am leaning towards the uniforms side since I've seen some inappropriately dressed boys and girls when I was in school.

I grew up going to public school, but now teach at a private school with uniforms. I cannot wait for our kids to go there. I'm getting 5 shirts, pants, and shorts from our volunteer store, which sells them for $2 a piece (most are brand new that people just didn't wear) and that's all I need to worry about! Do laundry on the weekend and we are good to go!

I attended a school with uniforms and I'm not convinced it did anyone much good. Kids have a way of pushing even a uniform dress code to the edge (eg who rolls their skirt up the highest? Who has the most brand name accessories?) and teachers still spent a ton of time looking for uniform violations.

I wore uniforms for 4 years in grade school and think they should be mandatory for all students k-12. When we all looked the same the behavior problems related to appearance where removed almost entirely and the focus could be out on education. When I got dressed every morning I knew exactly what I was wearing so there was no arguing or running late because of clothing. I saved my parents money and brand names didn't matter. I also felt put together and ready to work when I wore my uniform. I honestly can't think of a single negative thing to say about uniforms.

Sorry for that terrible run on paragraph..too lazy to correct it.

@katiew92081: I agree with this. No use in elementary school and unnecessary and restrictive in high-school. Middle school is perfect age for it, if at all.

I wanted to wear a uniform in middle school but high school is where you learn to express yourself. If you cannot dress appropriately that is a personal/parenting issue.

I didn't have to wear a uniform growing up (public schools K-12) but I wish we did. It would've taken so much drama out of the school day and I feel like enforcing the dress code wouldn't have been such an issue. I feel like on a daily basis, teachers had to take the time to correct students on what they were wearing, especially when the weather began to warm up and the shorts came out.

I work in a public school and we tried uniforms for a year. Here's the issue - in New York State parents are legally allowed to opt their students out of the uniform requirement. So we had students who only wore the uniform once a week and there was nothing we could do about it. It would've been great if there was no opt out clause.

My 13 year old niece goes to Catholic school and there is enough drama between the girls in her class without clothing drama too. She still gets to express herself with her hairstyles and nail polish (sometimes I'm jealous of how cute she does her hair!) and they get casual days every once in a while. I think it's a great policy.

I ONLY like them for middle school. I think they're not needed in elementary school and teens should learn how to dress appropriately in high school. But middle school is tough, so taking the pressure off fashion at that age is a good idea.

Having done both (in public school, no less), I am very much FOR school uniforms. As a kid, there was no fighting about what we had to wear. According to my mom, our play clothes stayed in better condition because we weren't wearing them to school. In High school, there was some competition, but it was the first year that uniforms had been enforced.

I went to private schools and always had to wear uniforms, so I don't really know any other way. It really made getting dressed easier in the morning! (But it hurt my case when I tried to convince my mom we needed to go 'back to school' clothes shopping!)

I don't have very strong feelings one way or the other, but I guess I would lean towards uniforms. Everyone looks nice, you aren't fighting over dress codes or level of appropriateness, and I assume it saves most parents a little bit of money-- though I could be wrong on that last one.

I went to a uniformed school and I totally recommend them. No one was made fun of because of what they were or weren't wearing. We also had a really broad range of what we could wear & we could also layer the tops, like a white dress shirt under a short sleeved navy polo.

ETA: we had civvies day once a month (with dress code, of course).

I can see both sides of the argument.

I think that clothing is a great way for students to express their individuality and determine their own sense of self and style.

However, as a teacher who CONSTANTLY has to send kids to change because of dress code violations, it would make things a lot easier! A lot of my girls don't quite understand how to dress for their body and wear clothes that show too much cleavage, too many curves, and often times are way too short. My boys frequently have their boxers hanging out and wear pajama pants to school.

Also, it would help with bullying for the students who simply cannot afford name brand clothes. Although, I honestly don't see this happening often.

I am totally FOR school uniforms! The school I went to had a very strict dress code & once they began enforcing it 75% of the school day was spent focusing on what was/wasn't appropriate that was worn. This kid didn't have a belt on, this one had a logo on their shirt, this ones shirt came untucked when she bent over, their shorts weren't finger tip length, etc. I WISHED we had had uniforms. Then atleast the focus would've been on teaching & not enforcing!

I attended public schools and we did not have to wear uniforms. The private school kids always looked so preppy chic decked out in their uniforms. My area public schools now require uniforms. They are not as fancy as the private schools, but none the less I love the idea of school uniforms. What about you?
