I'm 14 weeks and seem to be having this pain but it's in my right butt cheek. Putting heat on the spot seems to help but certain times it's very painful. We'll see how it goes the next few weeks!

Ok, I hope I'm not jinxing anything right now, but today, I am perfectly fine...... It's mid afternoon here and I have been perfectly fine all day, even whilst wrangling a cheeky toddler and packing up our kitchen for our renovation starting tomorrow. Touching every bit of wood I can find that this was just a one off occurrence and I don't have to experience that pain again!

Thank you all again for your helpful suggestions and kind words! :-)

Sadly, mine didn't go away until after birth. The only thing that helped, was to sleep with a snoogle pillow between my legs (lol) and that only helped mildly.

If it makes you feel any better, I didn't have sciatic pain with my second at all, only my first.

Going to the chiro helped me so much! So much so that I went for about two month pretty regularly and now I haven't needed to go lately. I'm 32 weeks now Fingers crossed it stays that way. I know it hurts like hell Try the chiro!!

Weirdly enough, I had this from about 20 - 28 weeks. I remember specifically because I had to fly for a wedding at 28 weeks, and was amazed that it cleared up right before we left. Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you all for your responses (sorry for being so tardy in getting back to this thread today!)

Lots of great advice given here and it sounds as though a support belt, icing, stretching/yoga, and chiro are the winning combos! I'm going to wait until the end of the week to see how things are going and then call my midwife or GP if it seems to be the same. The crazy thing is that both yesterday and today, the pain was awful in the morning and up until about 5:00 pm, when it then tapered off to just the odd minor twinge for the rest of the evening. Makes absolutely no sense to me unless all the moving throughout the day loosens everything up or encourages baby to move off the sciatic nerve.....who knows?! Either way, right now, at 10 pm, I feel 95% fine. Hoping it stays that way!!!

@My Only Sunshine: @Foodnerd81: Thanks for the links ladies! I will definitely check them out!

@Ree723: if ice helps, I really recommend this ice pack. It's nice and big and sturdy, but soft enough to really conform to your back. DH and I would fight over it when both our backs hurt. Chattanooga ColPac Cold Therapy, Black Polyurethane, Over-Size Cold Pack (12.5" x 18.5") https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000QFZRNE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_x72Ywb8Y9CVV4

In my first pregnancy, it started early and got really bad by about 20 weeks, but was gone by the third trimester. In my second pregnancy, I had it exactly as you have described - a pain in my left bum cheek but nowhere else, and this time it was gone by 20 weeks.

I got it around the same time and it lasted for about a month or so for me, on and off. For me, going to a chiropractor helped temporarily, and meanwhile wearing a maternity support belt or legit maternity pants with a full panel helped as well.

It can be so rough! Gentle warrior 1 and 2 helped. I have it my entire pregnancies. I also ice it a lot, laying down, which helps! Supportive, stiff back seating helps as well, and I try not to bend over!

I had a terrible sciatic nerve pain with DS! Weekly chiro visits along with wearing a maternity belt if I was on my feet for prolonged times helped significantly. However, the pain was a constant nagging back there. The chiro visits helped relieve the pressure for a few days before bad sitting/sleeping would inflame it again.

The pain went away post birth.

With my first it started around 18 weeks and lasted the entire pregnancy, although it was just (ha, "just") at night and rarely during the day. It went away immediately after giving birth.

With my second it came on around 26 weeks and has again been mostly at night, but also a bit more during the day this time. It's still hanging around at 36 weeks :bummed:

I had two boughts of sciatica during my pregnancy. The first around 12 weeks and the second around 22 weeks. Each lasted a couple weeks and then went away. The only thing my OB recommended was lying with a tennis ball under the sore spot for a DIY deep tissue massage. I also found that changing position regularly helped (I have a desk job, so I had to get up and move often). I freaked out thinking that it was going to last the whole pregnancy, but I was lucky and mine went away after a couple weeks.

Mine went away with physical therapy but I think when I'm pregnant again, I'll just go to the chiropractor until I deliver. The adjustments will help the nerve pain! With this last pregnancy, I was so much more comfortable after an adjustment.

I hope yours goes away soon!

@Ree723: I'm 27 weeks and started having sciatic pain last week. A maternity belt made a HUGE difference. I bought a Curad one from Amazon for like $13. I also stumbled across this article- http://guggiedaly.blogspot.com/2013/01/back-pelvic-pubis-and-sciatic-pain-in.html?m=1. The exercise with the foam roller she links to really helped me.

I had this with both pregnancies but much worse with my second. With my first it started around this same time, 20-ish weeks. It was bad for a couple weeks then subsided, I assume the baby's position changed or something. Ice and stretches were helpful.

With my second it was awful around 20 weeks- debilitating, I couldn't bring my two year old to the park because I couldn't chase her safely. A chiropractor helped a ton- deep massage and adjustments. But the benefits were temporary, I had to go back every few weeks and it would help again, but it was never as bad as right in the middle there. A pregnancy support belt and stretching helped. Limiting my walking (which sucks with a 2 year old). The only thing that made it go away completely was delivery- and it was instant. Like before the placenta was out I felt relief. But the chiropractor really helped in the mean time.

This is me. Once it starts it lasts till the end of pregnancy. Things that help- wearing a support belt under the bump, especially when walking, and trying to lift as little as possible. The second is hard with LOs, I know, but it does make a big difference, so look for ways they can start climbing up themselves, have step stools around etc. Also, not sitting in one position for too long at a time.

Mine was early on in pregnancy (maybe 18 weeks?), mild and lasted a few weeks and went away on it's own. Maybe a visit to chiropractor would help, might get baby to shift positions off that nerve.

I'm 22 weeks pregnant with our third and for the last several days, I have been suffering from what I think is sciatic pain. It comes and goes in intensity (worst in the morning, better by evening albeit still painful) but walking, sitting, twisting, bending, lifting, or even just shifting my weight (ie if I sneeze) causes excruciating pain in my left butt cheek. Walking up and down stairs is killer, and trying to wrangle my tantrum prone 24 month old is absolute torture. Getting in and out of the car makes my eyes water, and any sudden movement makes me literally gasp in pain.

I've done some research, trying to figure out if this is sciatica or pelvic girdle pain, but as it is only deep in my left butt cheek and nowhere else, I'm leaning towards sciatica. The pain doesn't radiate down my leg, it is very localised to one specific spot but it is seriously hindering my mobility....which is not something I can have with a 3.5 yr old and a 2 yr old.

I'm not due to see my midwife for another six weeks but I might put a call in to her to see if there's anything I can do, but in the meantime, just wondering what others experiences with this were like? How long did it last? What helped? Please don't tell me giving birth was the only cure as I will cry if this is what it's going to be like for the next 18 weeks!! I never had anything like this with either of my other two pregnancies so it's totally unfamiliar territory. Also, if you did experience this, did it impact your labour and delivery? And did the pain go away right after birth or did it linger on for a while (please no!)?

Experiences and suggestions welcome! Thanks!
